    Coach Mpilo Squad Leader

    Purpose of the position

    • Provide oversight of expert patient support and real-life examples of the ability to lead a normal life to men living with HIV if they get onto and adhere to ARV treatment within a sub-district cluster.
    • Squad Leaders support coaches to provide patient-centred, community-based support to male clients that require intensified counselling, one-on-one education and follow-up, to navigate them successfully through to self-sufficient management of their illness.  They support coaches to provide peer-based, experiential-based support and counselling inclusive of treatment adherence counselling, encouragement and support to honour clinical appointments for initiation or follow up, and provide assistance to address multiple psychosocial and/or health related needs.

    Key Accountabilities

    • Support the identification and recruitment of up to 20 coaches from the community in the identified areas based on the criteria as outlined in the Coach Mpilo role description
    • Provide training in groups and mentorship to the coaches utilising the Coach Mpilo curriculum and relevant case management material, as well as training on the reporting required
    • Ensure that every Coach has marketing materials and the tools required to function
    • Facilitate the introduction of new coaches to the facility(ies) in their catchment area
    • Support coaches to collaborate effectively with the facility(ies) in their catchment area to recruit and retain the required number of men as a minimum; and to ensure the timeous submission of information to relevant clinic staff by Coaches
    • Be available to provide support and advice to the coach, stepping in to assist if a coach cannot find a solution to a player’s challenge
    • Receive, monitor and analyze Coach feedback on a weekly basis; Problem solve issues raised by Coaches and if unable to solve escalate to Project Manager or Implementation partner if necessary
    • Monitor the performance of the coaches; collecting relevant information on a weekly basis.
    • Collate and compile ‘Coach Mpilo update reports’ and send to the PHC Area Manager and the National Technical Advisor responsible for Finding and Engaging Men
    • Conduct supervision sessions with each Coach every 2 weeks.
    • Build a database of challenges and solutions based on discussions with coaches and other Squad Leaders

    Essential qualifications  

    • Matric or Higher educational qualification
    • Proven comfort with disclosing positive HIV status.  Must have long-term treatment success and been on treatment for at least 12 months with viral suppression

    Desirable qualifications  

    • Lay counsellor certificate
    • Knowledge of basic HIV and HIV counselling experience
    • Experience & skills
    • Non-negotiable: In-depth experience in managing coaches in the Coach Mpilo programme with oversight for a minimum of 500 MLHIV
    • Proven administrative experience
    • Good writing and proven reporting skills
    • Experience working closely within communities with a good understanding of the nuances linked to successful roll-out of community initiatives
    • Experience working with HIV and Men’s health issues
