Developer: SQL at Santam Insurance

THE PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Information Management department has a position available for a Developer: SQL, in the Data Management team, based in Bellville, Cape Town. Santam is in the process of establishing a data-lake (Hadoop) and requires SQL developers that can assist with developing complex SQL statements and building ETL processes. The main focus will be to assist with moving data into the lake, querying data and building of views on the data within the lake.

WHAT WILL YOU DO? 

• The Developer:SQL will also be required to support the business in data related issues/queries.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assisting the business in moving data into the data lake (Hadoop)
• Building of views on the data within the data lake
• Responsible for investigating data queries and providing feedback to users and business.
• Physical database modelling and database design
• Evening and weekend work in response to needs of the systems being supported or ad-hoc project requirements is a necessity
• After-hours and weekend standby support required
• Required to work within a clearly defined accountability framework

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCESSFUL IN THE ROLE? 

• Must be proficient in SQL and operate at an advance level
• Technical ability in ETL concept, design and development
• Must have Quality Assurance / Testing skills, as well as Data Modelling skills
• referred technical skills:
• Big data/Hadoop technologies (HDFS, Hive, Impala, Spark)
• Databases: Sybase IQ, SQL Server, DB2
• Platforms: Unix, Windows
• Experience in the financial/insurance industry will be an advantageous
• Minimum 8 years of IT experience in SQL development and testing
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Big data environment 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Qualifications

• Relevant IT degree/diploma
• Certificate or Diploma in Big data tools from industry recognised training Institution will be an advantage but not essential

Knowledge

•  Industry best standards in designing and developing SQL statements
• Understanding of business, systems and data analysis advantageous
• Knowledge of IT System Development Life Cycles (SDLC) & agile methodologies specifically scrum
• Trouble shooting failures in data transfer process
• Good Data Warehousing knowledge
• Data modelling knowledge (Dimensional) and an understanding of data
• Sound understanding of technical data linage
• Sound knowledge of IT Systems Development Life Cycles (SDLC), including Agile methodologies
• Knowledge of the following will be an advantage:
• Information & data architecture
