    Forecasting Internships (REF.WFI/10/2025)

    • The South African Weather Service invites graduates who are in possession of an honours degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric sciences with at least mathematics on second year university level and physical sciences on first year university level to apply for a one-year training internship in forecasting at the head office of the South African Weather Service in Pretoria.
    • The qualification must also include the required dynamical courses as prescribed by the World Meteorological Organization (must be BIP-M compliant or near compliant (WMO-1083 version 2023). This course will start in February 2025. 

     The following must accompany the application: 

    • A certified copy of Matric results 
    • A certified copy of the full academic record to prove the subject choice at the university where applicable 
    • A certified copy of SA identity document 
    • A CV 
    • Motivation Letter 
    • A certified copy of the different degrees 

    The following will serve as recommendations: 

    • Good interpersonal relations 
    • A basic level of computer literacy

Entry level requirements for SMS posts: In terms of the Directive on Compulsory Capacity Development, Mandatory Training Days and Minimum Entry Requirements for SMS that was introduced on 1 April 2015, a pre-entry certificate obtained from National School of Government (NSG) is required for all SMS applicants. The course is available through the NSG under the name “Certificate for entry into SMS” (full details are available at: https://www.thensg.gov.za/training-course/sms-pre-entry-programme/). Furthermore, candidates shortlisted for the SMS post will be subjected to a technical exercise that intends to test relevant technical elements of the job. Following the interview and the technical exercise, the Selection Panel will recommend candidates to attend a generic managerial competency assessment in compliance with the DPSA Directive on the implementation of competency-based assessments.
