    Group Tax Manager

    Description
    Main Outputs and Responsibilities for This Position

    Tax Compliance:

    • Review income tax returns / provisional tax returns and supporting schedules prepared by Tax Accountant
    • Prepare income tax returns / provisional tax returns of subsidiaries in Group
    • Ensure that the payments are made timeously
    • Ensure accurate disclosure in compliance with IFRS requirements
    • Oversee that all returns for the Group are submitted timeously and accurately
    • Apply for Tax Clearance certificatesEnsure Integrity of the Group Tax Assets Register
    • Calculate and maintain the wear and tear schedules.
    • Compliance monitoring to ensure nil interest and penalties due to late submission of returns

    VAT:

    • Review VAT returns prepared by Tax Accountant 
    • Prepare VAT returns of main subsidiaries in Group
    • Ensure that the submissions and payments are made timeously
    • Update VAT apportionment calculation annually
    • Prepare information for VAT verifications audits

    Monthly, half year and yearend reporting:

    • Ensuring all appropriate group/entity/divisional tax documentation is in place
    • Calculate and process monthly tax journals
    • Perform monthly Balance Sheet recons
    • Perform annual tax calculations (Income tax, Deferred tax and Capital Gains Tax) for the main subsidiaries of the Group
    • Prepare a consolidate rate recon for the Group
    • Prepare tax notes and tax note reconciliation for Annual Financial Statements
    • Execute the Bi-Annually reconciliation with SARS statement of account.
    • Review, and where applicable, preparation of the tax computations for the budget forecast reports.
    • Assist Group FMs with any queries
    • Preparing reports to board committees
    • Recoverability of Tax Assets and Completeness of Tax liabilities Maintenance of the Group transfer pricing document
    • Maintain integrity of Tax GL accounts (tax expenses, assets & liabilities)SBL return submissions

    SARS liaison:

    • Solve all queries and tax related issues with SARS and monitor notifications from SARS
    • Attend to Revenue Authorities Audits and Information requests
    • Establish and maintain a harmonious and beneficial working relationship with SARS and its officials. This is to ensure that:Group is highly regarded from a compliance perspective by the Revenue authorities no unnecessary investigations and audits by SARS.
    • Disputes are resolved in an efficient and amicable manner.
    • Complete responses are made to Revenue Authorities in the event of queries and progress is regularly followed up.
    • SARS errors are identified, objected to and rectified.

    Liaising with internal and external auditors:

    • Liaise with auditors on tax related matters and calculations.
    • Assist auditors with information requests and queries during the year-end audit.
    • Implement audit recommendations.
    • Ensure the Group complies with all applicable tax laws and regulations
    • Ensure compliance with legislation and avoidance of penalties
    • Identify tax cost savings and tax efficiencies, wherever possible
    • Understand and analyse tax structuring and tax planning opportunities across the Group
    • Draft memorandums on legislative changes and impact(s) to the Group
    • Identify and manage all tax risks to ensure that the Group’s tax risk is minimised.
    • Ownership and maintenance of a tax risk register for the Group, documenting the Group's tax risks and approach to mitigating these risks via processes and controls.Maintenance of Group Tax Policies

    Other:

    • Preparation of tax papers to ensure compliance on non-standard transactions
    • Other ad hoc duties as assigned.

    Requirements
    Formal Education

    • MCom Tax /HDip Tax Law
       

    Experience

    • 5 years corporate tax experience (at least 2 years in managerial position)
    • Previous role as Group Tax Manager in a listed entity (advantage)
    • Overseeing tax compliance for 20 – 30 statutory entities 
    • Revenue Authority Audits and Queries (non-negotiable)
    • Transfer pricing (advantage)Experience with dealing with other African Revenue Authorities
