    Junior Geotechnical Engineer – D1

    JOB DESCRIPTION: 

    The incumbent will be assigned duties in the Geotechnical Department at EKAPA Mine and will be responsible for implementing and co-ordinating Geotechnical functions for the Underground Expansion Project in assistance to the Geotechnical Engineer

    Task and Responsibilities:

    • Issuing of support recommendations and maintaining quality assurance and control of support elements and installation including all testing and quality assurance on shortcrete and thin sprayed liners.
    • Monitor that excavations are done to design and adjust ground support and blasting practice as needed.
    • Monitoring of instrumentation, support conditions, ground conditions, mining-related damage, excavation and structure-related movement and ingress of water.
    • Ensure best practice core logging, face mapping of country rock and Kimberlite and rock characterisation including calculation of rock characterisation indexes, classifications and ratings.
    • Maintenance and update of on-mine Geotechnical model from RMR, Rock Strength Data as well as fracture analyses.
    • Maintenance and update of on-mine country rock model.
    • Maintenance and update of groundwater model.
    • Exploratory drilling for the purposes of Hydrology, Structure and Rock Strength.
    • Projects as may be assigned.
    • Report writing.
    • Train and mentor junior staff

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 12
    • Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering or Civil Engineering
    • Chamber of Mines Rock Engineering Certificate – preferably in massive underground mining
    • More than five (5) years’ relevant experience in underground mining – preferably in a block cave and mechanized development environment

    Advantageous:

    • Experience with Geotechnical Modeling and Block Cave Modeling software

    Other Skills / Competencies:

    • Technical risk management
    • Planning, coordinating and prioritising
    • Analysing and interpretation of information
    • Applicable legal knowledge and understanding
    • Decision making ability in fast changing environment
