    Legal Associate, Law Reform Advisory

    Responsibilities

    1. Legal Research and Analysis:

    • Conduct comprehensive legal research and analysis on various areas of law that relevant to the CIJ's focus areas of governance, economic development and social mobility
    • Contribute towards preparation of draft legislation, model legal provisions, legal memoranda, briefs, and reports that clearly articulate findings and recommendations for law reform

    2. Policy Advisory:

    • Provide policy advice and strategic guidance on law reform initiatives, considering the socio-political and economic contexts of target countries
    • Engage with stakeholders, including government entities, civil society organizations, the private sector and international organisations, to advance the adoption of legal reforms

    3. Capacity Building and Outreach:

    • Develop and deliver training sessions and workshops for stakeholders on legal reform processes and related subjects
    • Participate in public forums, conferences, and panels to represent the CIJ and disseminate its work

    4. Project Management:

    • Assist in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of law reform projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and budget
    • Prepare project reports and updates for internal and external stakeholders

    Requirements

    • Essential: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university
    • Desirable: Master of Laws (LLM) degree, with a focus relevant to CIJ's areas of interest
    • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in legal research, law reform, policy analysis, or a related field
    • Familiarity with the legal and policy environment in Africa and a keen understanding of challenges and opportunities for law reform
    • Strong analytical, research, legal drafting and writing skills, with the ability to present complex legal issues clearly and persuasively
    • Proficiency in English is mandatory; proficiency in additional African languages is highly advantageous
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural team
    • Proactive, motivated, and capable of managing multiple tasks efficiently under tight deadlines
    • Commitment to CIJ's mission and values, including a passion for legal reform and advancing the role of law as a catalyst for promoting good governance and economic development and social mobility in Africa
    • Only candidates who are legally eligible to work in Cape Town, South Africa will be considered
