    Librarian II: Archiving (P8) (Library and Information Centre: Archiving, Special Collections & IR)

    Job description

    Responsibilities:

    • Ensuring compliance to all university policies and national archival prescript.
    • Carries out all archival program-related managerial functions, including budget preparation, personnel administration, and performance plan.
    • Appraisal, acquisition, processing, and preservation of archival material.
    • Developing inventories for retrieval of records and ensure smooth accessibility of archives collection.
    • Digitization of archival material and establish intellectual control over digital and physical archival records.
    • Conduct outreach programmes to promote archival collection.
    • Conduct oral history and transcribing of recordings.
    • Provide strategic direction, guidance, and implementation of programmes.
    • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned. 

    Minimum requirements

    • Degree in Library Science at (NQF 7) or Archives and Records Management qualification.

    • Five years' experience working in the library, with three years in the Archives environment.
    • Supervisory experience preferably in archives and special collections.
    • The incumbent should be innovative, creative, and understand the research process.
    • Knowledge of preservation, conservation, arrangement, and description archival materials of all formats.
    • Able to inventory development and management of audiovisual material.
    • Able to conduct oral history projects.

    Recommendations:

    • Post Graduate Diploma in Archives and Record Management an added advantage.
    • Strong organizational, planning, time management, and interpersonal skills.
    • Knowledge of English, Zulu, Afrikaans and Sotho language.
    • Understanding of archival administration and customer service.
    • Knowledge of digitization systems and processes.
    • Knowledge of historiography, oral history, and research.
    • Knowledge of paper based and electronic retrieval systems.
    • A good understanding of documented heritage.
