Manager, Data Engineering at 2U

This role will be responsible for implementing and maintaining Data Infrastructure Systems within 2U Short Courses. These systems include Master Data Management Systems, Data Virtualization Systems, Data Visualization Systems and Data Warehousing. The candidate should be an experienced data professional and will provide guidance to Junior Data Engineers. This candidate will manage one or more Junior Data Engineers and will guide them through all aspects of their job. The candidate should be driven and keen to learn new things. As data engineering lead for Academic Product this role will be responsible for ensuring that the proper Data Architecture principles are taken into account across the portfolio. Focus will be to implement the proper Data Governance, Quality and Security to ultimately prepare the data pipeline for end user reporting and integrations.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To

• Maintain all Data Systems
  • Overall maintenance of systems
  • After hours support (Dogwatch) on a rotational basis
• Analyze requirements defined by business stakeholders in order to action point 3
• Implement enhancements and new features across the following Data Systems:
  • Enterprise Data Warehouse
  • Reporting Infrastructure
  • ETL Landscape
  • Data Virtualization Platform
  • Master Data Management
• Perform research (Innovate) and make possible recommendations on the following Data Systems:
  • Enterprise Data Warehouse
  • Reporting Infrastructure
  • ETL Landscape
  • Data Virtualization Platform
  • Master Data Management
• Upskill across all of the technologies at 2U Cape Town
• Ensure Data Quality and Data Governance is in place across the whole Data Infrastructure
• Management of direct reports
  • Set Smart Goals for Direct Reports
    • 3 Months
    • 6 Months
  • Coach Direct Reports through complex issues
  • Provide feedback on Performance (PDS)
  • Manage career paths for the respective Direct Reports
  • Ensure Work-Life balance is maintained
  • Communicate clear instructions to Direct Reports
  • Support Direct Reports with any aspect of their job
• Improve and help streamline processes within the Data Systems team based on guidance from Senior Data Engineer
• Provide guidance to Junior Data Engineers
• Adhere to internal Agile methodology

Things That Should Be In Your Background

• 4+ years experience in the Data industry
• Specific qualifications or technical skills
  • A degree in Computer Science/Information Systems/Engineering preferred
  • Be proficient in SQL to then implement where needed in both the Data Virtualization and Data Warehousing systems
  • PostgreSQL / MS SQL / MySQL / Python / R / Redshift experience
  • Experience in database design and database management
  • Experience in data analysis and business intelligence
  • A sound understanding of data management principles including data quality assurance and data governance
  • Experience in source code and version control systems
  • Experience in master data management and the implementation and maintenance thereof
  • Experience in the shipment of data using various methods such as ETL etc.
  • Experience in the implementation of data visualisation systems/technologies
  • Experience in AWS environments
