    Manager Engineering

    The Engineering Manager – Shafts is accountable for designing, operating and optimising the South Deep Mine Shafts, Ground Handling and related Infrastructure systems.  This includes the installation, maintenance and modification of all mechanical and electrical equipment and systems.  Drawing off an established shaft production and engineering track record, the incumbent is required to initiate and lead the technical evaluation of existing and new equipment and technologies, conducting relevant operational benchmarking and best practice studies, and leading integrated Asset Optimisation projects to attain optimal equipment efficiencies and production outcomes. As Senior Manager, the successful incumbent will also be accountable for driving a culture of safety, productivity, and respect within the organization, ensuring that these values are embedded in all aspects of operations.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Post Graduate degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
    • Professional registration with a recognised Engineering Professional Body (ECSA, AMRE, SAIEE)
    • Government Certificate of Competence – Mines & Works
    • 10 years operational experience in a mining, minerals processing or heavy industry engineering environment; of which 5 years should have been at middle management level
    • Proven track record in managing vertical shaft winders and associated shaft infrastructure
    • Advanced proficiency in large Stay-In-Business and/or Major Capital Project Delivery
    • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

    Key Competencies:

    • Advanced operational safety leadership experience with demonstrated safety delivery record
    • Advanced proficiency in applicable legislative, safety, health & environmental requirements and standards
    • Capability to assume legal appointment in terms of regulation 2.13.1 and 7.4 of the MHSA
    • Accomplished team and people leader with strong inter- and intra-team collaboration and influential skills
    • Ability to cope with ambiguity with high personal resilience and change adaptability
    • Understanding complex systems and their interrelationships, identify patterns, and develop effective solutions to problems
    • Established problem-solving skills with advanced appreciation for business optimisation methodologies e.g., lean-six sigma
    • Highly developed personal accountability, delivery orientation and ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects, interventions, etc.
    • Well-developed appreciation for ESG and Corporate Citizenship
    • Proven experience in full cycle operational financial and commercial budgeting plans, tools and systems

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Promote a culture of authentic safety leadership by participating in and leading operational Safety, Health, Environment and Risk management campaigns, audits, incident management and investigations
    • Monitor relevant legislative changes impacting the engineering discipline and develop recommended strategies/interventions to ensure compliance within area of accountability
    • Championing the company’s strategies and initiatives to promote a respectful, diverse, and inclusive workplace culture, while driving the company's strategic people initiatives
    • Participate in and lead team coaching, resourcing, capability, succession and talent management initiatives
    • Develop, execute, and monitor short, medium, and long-term infrastructure and maintenance strategies and budgets, aligned with Engineering Asset Management Strategy and governance standards
    • Lead the standardisation of processes, equipment and procedures ensuring the development of relevant standards and training material
    •  Implement engineering planning systems (labour, materials, utilities, and capital) integrated with mining planning cycle as part of Mine Business Strategy
    •  Collaboratively develop and maintain a strategic Spares Review for Shaft Infrastructure operations to manage availability, accessibility, and quality
    • Lead daily operational performance engagement with teams, facilitate root cause analysis, develop remediation plans, and analyse operational delivery trends to implement optimized production processes and systems for long term asset capability improvement initiatives
    • Identify asset and operational improvement requirements and incorporate into the planning and preparation of short-, medium- and long-term engineering working cost and capital budgets and prepare business plans to achieve objectives
    • Participate in and lead regular and ad hoc short, medium and long-term operational planning and scheduling sessions with a focus on actively identifying and collaboratively solving operational delivery and value chain optimisation challenges
    • Stay abreast of advances and developments in engineering methodologies, techniques and technology to discern industry leading practices in relation to operations optimisation, maintenance, control and automation and mechanisation for adoption and application at South Deep
    • Continuously explore and develop comprehensive energy and environmental saving strategies to effectively reduce the cost, consumption and emissions as per legislative requirements
    • Manage stakeholder relationships with key internal, Business Partner and external stakeholders by ensuring broad accountability is maintained against operational delivery, service level, commercial, community and ethical standards
    • Control expenditure on working cost, capital and all other related budgets
