    Market Development Manager

    Role Purpose

    • Deliver the Company’s commercial and marketing objectives within the SA informal market channel (on and off trade with a Johannesburg focus). The incumbent will work alongside our in-market distribution partners to maximise opportunities, build the existing business and strengthen the long-term brand equity in this channel.  

     

    Responsibilities

    • By working with our in-market distribution partners, take responsibility, for c.100 key on and off trade customers within the SA informal market channel – incl. redistributors if required (JHB focus but will also include identified outlets in other key regions)
    • Agree and deliver commercial budgets in connection with the Country Manager and in market distribution partners
    • Assist our in-market distribution partners with the development and execution of the informal market channel plan which will include a “route to consumer” component that drives optimal distribution. 
    • Ensure our in-market distribution partners effectively execute our planned marketing activities and measure their effectiveness
    • Work with our in-market distribution partners to implement shopper marketing principles in terms of visibility and activation in this channel
    • Build strong, mutually beneficial relationships with distribution partners and the trade.
    • Analyse available data (depletions, stocks, forecasts and market shares) to stay informed of trends, identify gaps and make recommendations on feasible solutions
    • Understand and deliver the pricing strategy for each brand and explore ways of generating value
    • Build solid awareness of market trends (consumer, competitor, macro-economic etc), and identify opportunities to drive business development through existing and new customers or routes to market - feed insights into Country Manager, Regional Marketing Team and in market distribution partners.

     

    Skills, Qualifications and Experience :

    Essential:

    • Educated to degree level, or equivalent
    • Solid track record of positive contribution within the informal market segment, ideally in the Wine & Spirits or Beverages industries
    • Strong numerical skills with the ability to identify insights from data
    • Exceptional influencing and negotiation skills; able to network across functions and at all levels of the business and challenge constructively
    • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to express yourself in a clear, succinct, compelling and energetic manner
    • Creative with an entrepreneurial spirit
    • Action oriented self-starter who is able to work with minimum supervision
    • Demonstrates professionalism, credibility, trust and respect both internally and externally
    • Fluent in English, with any additional languages such as Zulu or Xhosa an advantage

     

    Desirable:

    • Understanding and working knowledge of brand building within the informal market segment  
    • Evidence of applying category management principles that drive value and volume growth
