    Proofreader | isiXhosa & English

    Description

    • The isiXhosa/English Proofreader role at the Valenture Institute is primarily responsible for proofreading, editing and quality-assuring secondary school course content and assessments that are suitable for high-touch online delivery. The incumbent will play a vital role in ensuring that the course content is thoroughly checked for accurate use of language, grammar and style. The isiXhosa/English Proofreader will work closely with the Project Management and Learning Design teams to ensure that there is a progression in the finalisation of content reviews to meet the project deadlines.

    The responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:


    Responsibilities:

    • Proofread and edit reports and course content from a variety of different writers, ensuring accurate and consistent use of grammar and style.
    • Read the course content in context (and for understanding) and point out any obvious errors or issues that could hinder student understanding or cause potential confusion.
    • Improve editorial and visual standards for documents and recommend new designs, layouts and procedures as needed.
    • Manage the proofreading process both independently and as a member of the proofreading team.
    • Work effectively with the other Proofreaders, Project Management and various operational stakeholders, to ensure that deadlines are adhered to and that project communication takes place in a timely and effective manner.
    • Format documents as required (i.e. Google Docs and PDF’s).
    • Review layout to ensure accuracy and consistency with the style guide, check documents for consistency in terms of contents pages, font sizes and font type, page numbers, figures, captions, tables, numbering etc.
    • Serve as a fact-checker for materials, including references, web links, names, titles, copyright information.
    • Coordinate freelance proofreader to deliver work within the delineated deadlines and requisite quality.
    • Develop proofreading and editing processes/procedures and best practice guidelines on an ongoing basis.

    Requirements

    • A Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Education, PGCE, or related experience in a specific editorial or educational area.
    • Minimum of 2 years proofreading or editorial experience.
    • Previous experience in the educational publishing industry is preferable.
    • Demonstrable experience as a proofreader, editor, copy editor, managing editor
    • Knowledge of digital learning principles and practices.
    • The ability to proofread in both isiXhosa and English is a prerequisite for this position.
    • A stable internet connection is required.
    • Having your own laptop would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
