    Seabird Rehabilitator - Gqeberha

    Key responsibilities and duties will include:

    • Daily care and treatment of various species of seabirds, of all ages, including after hours on-call duties and emergency response.
    • Rehabilitation of seabirds to allow successful release into the wild.
    • Cleaning of bird enclosures, pools, and hospital areas.
    • Maintenance of the facility.
    • Ongoing training and supervision of local and international volunteers.
    • Mentoring seabird rehabilitation interns.
    • Presenting talks on seabird rehabilitation topics.
    • Daily detailed record keeping of all seabirds in care.
    • Assisting the veterinary team in the SANCCOB seabird hospital.

    Key competencies

    • The successful candidate will be a team player that is physically fit, hardworking, dedicated, able to manage time efficiently, and can work in all weather conditions, able to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays and frequently in excess of standard working hours. This person must be able to lead a team of interns and volunteers to give the best possible care to the seabirds undergoing rehabilitation and be able to contribute to emergency responses to crisis situations such as oil spills, disease outbreaks or mass rescue and abandonment incidents. A caring, compassionate nature with a love for seabirds and an understanding of the need for conservation of these vulnerable animals is essential.

    Qualification and Experience

    • A tertiary qualification in Biological Science, wildlife or conservation preferred.
    • At least two years’ experience working in wildlife rehabilitation, especially seabird experience would be advantageous.
    • Experience working according to standard operating procedures.
    • Experience supervising small teams.
    • A valid driver’s licence.
    • Computer literate (Microsoft Office package).
    • Only open to South African ID holders.
    • Flexible to deploy to an emergency incident at short notice
