    Education Supervisor - Gqeberha

    Key responsibilities:

    Education:

    • Develop and offer quality educational programs for both children and adults.
    • Develop and conduct interactive public tours of the SANCCOB facility.
    • Train education staff and volunteers to assist with tours and education lessons.
    • Develop new educational programs, learning material and activities that are in line with SANCCOB’s mission.
    • Update the tour script and information boards regularly based on current seabird statistic.
    • Grow educational income by identifying new funding opportunities and assisting the Resource Development Department and Gqeberha Centre Manager to write applications for funding requests.
    • Network with personnel in the field of education at other environmental education institutions.

    Education Staff:

    • Provide leadership to the education team, guiding them towards methods of best teaching practice and professional conduct.

    Volunteer and Intern Programme:

    Oversee and coordinate all aspects of the SANCCOB volunteer and internship programme at the Gqeberha centre, including the following:

    • Ensure sufficient volunteers and interns are available and utilised effectively to support SANCCOB’s capacity requirements.
    • Ensure interns and volunteers are managed effectively and enjoy their time at SANCCOB.
    • Co-ordinate orientation sessions, networking, and training sessions to provide volunteers and interns with knowledge and skills to contribute in a meaningful way during their time at SANCCOB.
    • Ensure the development and growth of the volunteer and intern programme.

    Administrative functions:

    • Assist with the preparation of the education department’s annual budget and manage it effectively.
    • Manage inventories of all the education department equipment and ensure that systems are in place to take care of all the equipment. 
    • Produce monthly reports and statistics.
    • Coordinate all logistical arrangements for educational programmes.
    • Prepare project budgets, demographic information and assist with donor reports.
    • Assist at front desk when necessary, including managing point of sale system.

    Events:

    • Work with SANCCOB staff and external partners to assist with event planning and implementation.

    Requirements:

    • Strong people management and development skills with the ability to motivate and lead staff, interns and volunteers.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills (ability to do so in more than one language would be advantageous).
    • Strong programme development skills.
    • Planning and organisational capabilities and the ability to work against strict deadlines. 
    • Passion for wildlife conservation and preservation.
    • Relevant tertiary qualification preferable.
    • Ability to work in a team.
    • Ability to problem-solve.
    • Able to work on weekends and public holidays.
    • Minimum 2 years’ working experience.
    • Computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Valid Code 8 driver’s license and own transport.

    Seabird Rehabilitator - Gqeberha

    Key responsibilities and duties will include:

    • Daily care and treatment of various species of seabirds, of all ages, including after hours on-call duties and emergency response.
    • Rehabilitation of seabirds to allow successful release into the wild.
    • Cleaning of bird enclosures, pools, and hospital areas.
    • Maintenance of the facility.
    • Ongoing training and supervision of local and international volunteers.
    • Mentoring seabird rehabilitation interns.
    • Presenting talks on seabird rehabilitation topics.
    • Daily detailed record keeping of all seabirds in care.
    • Assisting the veterinary team in the SANCCOB seabird hospital.

    Key competencies

    • The successful candidate will be a team player that is physically fit, hardworking, dedicated, able to manage time efficiently, and can work in all weather conditions, able to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays and frequently in excess of standard working hours. This person must be able to lead a team of interns and volunteers to give the best possible care to the seabirds undergoing rehabilitation and be able to contribute to emergency responses to crisis situations such as oil spills, disease outbreaks or mass rescue and abandonment incidents. A caring, compassionate nature with a love for seabirds and an understanding of the need for conservation of these vulnerable animals is essential.

    Qualification and Experience

    • A tertiary qualification in Biological Science, wildlife or conservation preferred.
    • At least two years’ experience working in wildlife rehabilitation, especially seabird experience would be advantageous.
    • Experience working according to standard operating procedures.
    • Experience supervising small teams.
    • A valid driver’s licence.
    • Computer literate (Microsoft Office package).
    • Only open to South African ID holders.
    • Flexible to deploy to an emergency incident at short notice
