    Senior Flood Engineer / Senior Hydraulic Modeller

    The Opportunity:

    Our South Africa team is currently looking for a Senior Flood Engineer / Hydraulic Modeller to join a vibrant, regional, dynamic and engaging team working on innovative and exciting projects. We are aware that flooding impacts millions of people across the African continent and are building a team of vibrant, innovative experts to respond to this ever increasing need to protect people and the environment. As a global design and consulting firm, we strive for valuable, holistic solutions that are sustainable and that make people's lives better.

    • You will work on a variety of projects across South Africa, Africa and the United Kingdom where you will apply your flood modelling and design expertise. The South Africa and Africa focus of the role will be to support in the delivery of flood resilience and adaptation projects across Africa in alignment with the Africa Water Strategy and South Africa Water Strategy. This includes knowledge transfer to colleagues across the continent.
    • The UK work will include assisting with the appraisal and delivery of a major programme of capital schemes to reduce flood risk as part of the Environment Agency’s Collaborative Delivery Framework which we have a solid pipeline of work.
    • You will play a part in the ever-increasing digital transformation of our business, seeking new ways to increase our efficiency through automation and to offer new services to our clients through our integrated digital approach to design.
    • The extensive use of hydrological and hydraulic modelling software as well as the design of these interventions in Africa is a pre-requisite. We believe that the use of Nature-based Solutions, Natural Flood Management and the like are crucial for flood resilience in Africa, therefore an appreciation and understanding of these is required.

    Is this role right for you?

    You will be reporting directly to the team management, alongside existing colleagues, this role will involve guiding on a range of technical tasks. As well as providing technical guidance, mentoring and supervision of more junior staff members, and delivering an active engagement in skills capacity building in technical appraisal across the firm. In addition, you will develop reports, and provide a design/review of engineering solutions and implementation. Furthermore, you will guide and be responsible for the development and design of hydraulic models and management solutions. Our candidate will manage project teams to ensure the production of deliverables such as quality, timeliness, and budget. In addition, you will coordinate staff resources between projects and support senior management in business and technical development.  

    This is a vibrant and dynamic role, which would suit an individual, passionate about both the environment and the use of digital tools and models. Please review the technical knowledge areas below for more detail:

    • Deep technical experience in hydraulic modelling, in particular applied for fluvial flood risk management.
    • A strong hydrology background and understanding. 
    • Experience in the use of HEC-RAS (1D, 1D/2D and 2D) or similar software.
    • Extensive experience in the flooding sector within Africa.
    • A relevant undergraduate degree, with a master’s or equivalent experience.
    • Professional registration with either ECSA or SACNASP, or other appropriate institution or willing to pursue professional registration.
    • Experience in the use of GIS, pluvial flood risk management will be advantageous.
    • Experience in Flood Modeller Pro, Tuflow, and other industry standard software will be advantageous but not compulsory.
