    Senior Lecturer - Department of Private Law - Faculty of Law

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbents will be responsible for:

    • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in programmes on offer in the Department;
    • Developing a research programme in an appropriate area of expertise or expanding existing research programmes;
    • Publishing research articles in the foremost national/international accredited journals;
    • Participate in national and international conferences within the research focus areas;
    • Supervising postgraduate master’s and doctoral students within the research focus areas; 
    • Performing assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature);
    • Community engagement in relation to the research focus areas;
    • Representing the Department on Faculty and other committees as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Candidates for the post of Senior Lecturer should be in possession of a completed doctorate with specialisation in one or more of the following focus areas:

    • Law of Contract;
    • Private International Law;
    • Unjustified Enrichment;
    • Law of Succession;

    Candidates for the post of Senior Lecturer who are in possession of a completed doctorate with specialisation in one or more of the following focus areas will also be considered:

    • Law of Estoppel;
    • Law of Delict;
    • Intellectual Property Law;
    • Law and Technology;
    • Property Law;
    • Family Law.
    • The academic record of the candidate must be excellent and must reflect the candidate's potential to become established as a teacher and researcher of good standing within one or more of the research focus areas.
    • Preferably five years' teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in one or more of the research focus areas listed above.
    • At least eight accredited quality publications within the research focus areas in the last three years.
    • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision within the research focus areas of at least 2 research master’s degrees or 4 coursework master’s mini-dissertations will be a strong recommendation.
    • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching will be a strong recommendation.
    • Relevant academic administration experience.

    • Attention to detail and accuracy;
    • Ability to facilitate e-learning and e-communication;
    • Ability to plan and conduct assessment events;
    • Ability to work in teams and to lead teams;
    • Ability to take initiative and to explore academic collaborative work opportunities;
    • Ability to work under pressure.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • An appropriate NRF research rating will be a recommendation.
    • Admission and experience as a legal practitioner will be an advantage.
