    Senior Manager Operations - Microbiology Plant

    The impact of Senior Manager is to lead the Johannesburg Operations team, to ensure high quality production of agreed product lines in accordance with plan, at lowest effective cost and within time schedules. Close association with the our sales channels.

    To act in the capacity of site leader for the Johannesburg site, taking key responsibility for safety &wellbeing. To ensure site wide communications and initiatives such as Town Halls, site management meetings and the PPI steering committee, occur regularly.

    Main Duties And Responsibilities

    • To lead the Microbiology Johannesburg operating site within corporate guidelines, policies and procedures.
    • To fulfill and be responsible for the group’s Safety, Health and Environmental obligations within Johannesburg in line with both Thermo Fisher requirements and wider South Africa legal requirements. To actively promote Health & Safety awareness of all other employees and contractors or third parties on site.
    • To ensure that site is fully integrated within the group and Thermo Fisher Scientific, processes, procedures, initiatives and culturally.
    • To provide leadership to achieve continuous improvement in manufacturing cycle time, schedule realization and total cost efficiency. Drive cultural change to deliver this.
    • To lead the Operations functions including Production, Planning, Distribution and Engineering with the objective of ensuring the efficient running of the supply chain and its continuous improvement through Lean or Six Sigma methods as appropriate.
    • To deliver the strategic business plans. Translate business unit goals into department goals; ensure implementation of plans to achieve or exceed goals.
    • Track progress toward goals and ensure timely initiation of corrective actions.
    • To support the preparation and delivery of business plans in conjunction with the sales, finance and other functions, ensuring that staffing, technical and support functions are adequate for the agreed quality output.
    • To arrange technical support for prepared media production and associated products is provided to the business
    • To sustain focus on customer service and ensure that customer needs are constantly reviewed and serviced.
    • To define appropriate equipment, facilities, headcount and costs for new product manufacture or significant up-grades of current product ranges.
    • To build, develop and manage leadership team capable of carrying out needed operational strategies and employment development activities.
    • To represent the site in the preparation of Operations budgets and business plans alongside the sales channels and finance division, ensuring a customer-first approach.
    • Deliver against the Operations business plan once this has been authorized.
    • To work successfully within the organisation's matrix structure to enable the site to deliver its objectives
    • To run Operations Capital Project and Revenue budgets
    • Any other tasks/duties deemed to be within the competence of the post-holder.

    Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree within scientific, technical or manufacturing field. Additional business qualification preferred.
    • Minimum 10 years business experience showing clear progression, the ability to contribute to a cross functional leadership team and success in various business situations.
    • Minimum 5 years of management experience within a manufacturing environment.
    • Knowledge of production of culture media preferred.
    • Experience working in healthcare manufacturing or similar regulated environment with a strong quality culture using quality data to deliver performance improvements.
    • An established track record of achieving strong internal and external customer satisfaction levels.
    • Demonstrated ability to balance both the tactical and strategic needs within the business.
    • Proven track record to communicate across all levels of the organization, build relationships, be seen as a role model leader by others.
    • Experience of handling different departments, functions,or large teams and strong experience of developing others.
    • Proven leadership experience, ideally in a sophisticated environment and in delivering cultural change.
