Owns the process of identifying, measuring and managing insurable or hazard risks, to develop and enable the implementation of an Insurance and Risk Financing strategy that will meet the business demands of the Company.
The jobholder is responsible to plan the strategic direction of the Group Insurance function encompassing risk financing, insurance, alternative risk transfer and claims management which links into the Group Strategy. Currently the jobholder needs to plan ahead for 3 years.
Position Outputs
Establishes and monitors the insurance framework, policies, procedures and uniform norms and standards
Keeps up to date with the latest developments and thinking in the areas of insurance and claims management
Proactively reviews current insurance renewal process, insurance claims processing, systems and procedures in the light of key stakeholder requirements and changing circumstances. Takes steps to improve these.
Ensures compliance with Transnet claims handling protocols, standards and norms.
Advises and guides the organisation, on the business implications and viability of all insurance claims and policy decisions and initiatives.
Partners with and provides support
Provides the framework for the effective administration and management of all insurance related matters
Works in conjunction with the key internal stakeholders, to actively support the achievement of business objectives Provides 'decision support' on all insurance related matters Manages the annual insurance renewal process,
Active management of all asset and recovery claims on behalf of Operating Divisions and the management of all record keeping relating thereto
Communicates insurance and claims handling measures, protocols and standards to all staff
Ensures the implementation of relevant legal requirements relating to the law of Insurance and Damages
Ensures that the insurance and claims handling processes with the Operating Divisions & Specialist Units comply with the Group- Executive Manager Credit and Counterparty.
Insurance and claims handling protocols and standards
Anticipates potential problems areas and advises on appropriate corrective action o Insurance compliance, risk mitigation and claims administration
Identifies risk areas in relation to insurance especially claims handling and motivates projects and funding to address these if required.
Establishes the relevant internal administrative procedures, controls and authority levels to ensure compliance and effective claims administration
Ensures effective management of all insurance and claims matters in order to limit potential exposure to the company.
Establish relationships with relevant insurers and underwriters and management of service providers brokers
Initiating process improvement
Anticipates potential problem areas and advises on appropriate corrective action and keeps up to date with the latest developments and thinking in the areas of insurance and claims management
Proactively reviews current insurance and claims handling procedures in the light of key stakeholders requirements and changing circumstances
Proactively identifies and mitigates Strategic, Operational and Insurance related risks and exposures and identifies all control breaches and ensures in conjunction with ODs and Specialist Units closure of such breaches.
Provides insurance training and development to various stakeholders across the business.
Improving current contracting processes (SLAs) to eliminate inefficient processes by developing new templates and precedents and standard operating procedures.
Ensure appropriate people management practices in accordance with relevant policies, procedures and legal.
Provides direction to the on-going development and implementation of improved insurance and claims handling processes and practices across all operations.
Liaises with Legal to ensure that contracts/agreements are appropriately reviewed to ensure Transnet SOC Limited is sufficiently indemnified.
Partners with and provides support to the line manager with the process and appointment of the new Insurance Brokerage Service Providers.
Pro-actively manages all insurance related matters in the most efficient and effective way.
Advises the organization on complex insurance related matters; Represent Transnet at meetings with local and international insures.
Qualifications and Experience
Relevant Bachelor’s Degree (NQF 7) - includes areas of Risk Management, Engineering, Finance.
A post graduate qualification is required.
At least 10-12 years' relevant experience, of which 8 years must be in managing Insurance and Claims.
Exposure in at least 2 of the following environments would be an added advantage: - Marine Insurance - Aviation Insurance - Assets All Risk Insurance - General Liability Insurance & other Specific Liability Insurance - Group Personal Accident Insurance - Principal Controlled Insurance SASRIA.
