Shipping Controller

About The Job

The CSIR has a vacancy for a Shipping Controller in the Strategic Procurement portfolio. The incumbent will manage, arrange and coordinate all import/export consignments from point of collection to point of delivery, in accordance with applicable incoterms or other terms dictating the movement of goods. This position is based in Pretoria.

Key Responsibilities

• Determine the applicable mode of transport for the commodity to be imported/exported;
• Liaise with customers/airlines/agents/couriers, obtaining quotes and costing import/export consignments;
• Adhere to Air International Transport Authority and other transport regulating authorities when transporting commodities;
• Apply and obtain the necessary applicable permits/certificates/data safety sheets if applicable;
• Negotiate freight rates with freight agents and couriers;
• Obtain quotes from various freight agents and couriers for each consignment;
• Assist with calculating the estimated landing cost of import/export consignment;
• Handle, control, track trace and resolve all import/export and domestic consignments and determine the best incoterm per consignment;
• Prepare and check payments of agents dealing with all aspects of import/export;
• Check all import/export transport invoices with quotes and terms, authorizing invoices for finance to make payments;
• Arrange, monitor and control all import/export consignments with regular feedback to clients;
• Maintain an effective professional relationship with clients;
• Assist with all insurance claims procedures;
• Update databases and record keeping to SARS regulations, for insurance, statistical and auditing purposes;
• Ensure import is in compliance with CSIR policies and procedures;
• Ensure all transactions are done in a cost effective way.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

• A three year degree in import/export or logistics with at least five years’ experience in import/export and logistic environment;
• Thorough understanding of the international supply chain, airfreight, sea freight and courier services and customs;
• Ability to meet demanding deadlines;
• Knowledge of the Custom Act;
• Sound knowledge of incoterms and freight forwarding industry;
• Sound knowledge of airfreight, sea freight, road and courier services.
