Systems Engineer II (VMware) at Shoprite Group of Companies

Purpose of the Job    

• The Software Systems Engineer II (VMware) is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining virtualized infrastructure and back-end systems using VMware technologies.
• This role ensures the delivery of secure, scalable, and efficient virtual environments that support business operations and digital platforms.
• It involves system analysis, configuration, troubleshooting, and optimization of VMware solutions, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate virtualization into enterprise architecture.

Job Objectives    

Design and Implementation:

• Architect and deploy VMware-based virtualized environments tailored for business applications, ensuring scalability, security, and high availability.
• Align designs with enterprise standards and future growth strategies.

Configuration and Management:

• Install, configure, and maintain VMware vSphere, ESXi hosts, and vCenter Server.
• Manage clusters, resource pools, and virtual networking components.
• Perform regular updates, patching, and capacity planning.

Automation and Optimization:

• Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerCLI, Ansible, or similar tools to streamline deployments and operations.
• Implement proactive performance tuning and resource optimization for virtual machines and clusters.

Analysis and Troubleshooting:

• Conduct system analysis to identify virtualization needs and propose solution alternatives.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across compute, storage, and network layers within VMware infrastructure.
• Perform root cause analysis and implement permanent fixes.

Integration and Collaboration:

• Work closely with storage, network, and application teams to ensure seamless integration of VMware solutions into enterprise architecture.
• Support cross-functional projects and provide technical expertise during planning and execution.

Security and Compliance:

• Apply VMware security hardening guidelines and manage access controls.
• Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and implement encryption and backup strategies.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:

• Maintain detailed documentation of VMware configurations, processes, and best practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and actively participate in knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation:

• Contribute to CI/CD pipeline enhancements for virtualized environments.
• Research and recommend advanced VMware tools and technologies (e.g., NSX for network virtualization, vSAN for storage, Tanzu for Kubernetes, Horizon for VDI).
• Stay updated on emerging trends and incorporate innovative solutions to improve efficiency and reliability.

Qualifications    

• Diploma or Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field – (essential)
• VMware certifications (e.g., VCP-DCV, VCAP) – (essential).

Experience    

• 4 years’ experience in software engineering or a similar role – (essential).
• Experience with hybrid cloud integration (AWS, Azure, GCP) – (advantageous)

Knowledge and Skills    

Proficiency in: 

• VMware vSphere, ESXi, vCenter Server.
• VMware NSX for network virtualization.
• VMware vSAN for storage virtualization.
• Automation tools (PowerCLI, Ansible).
• Backup and disaster recovery solutions for VMware – (essential).
• Knowledge of Agile methodologies and security best practices – (essential).
