    Tax Accountant

    MAIN PURPOSE:

    • To ensure that the Woolworths Group complies with the tax legislation, providing advice to the business, and to ensure that various statutory returns are completed and submitted according to legislative and SARS requirements.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assist with reviewing and advising African country subsidiaries with tax matters (income tax, VAT, Customs duty, Payroll taxes).
    • Keep up to date with the African tax legislation, and investigate changes that impact Woolworths. Inform the African subsidiaries. Ensure updates are implemented.
    • Assist with the drafting of the SA VAT returns and ensure it is completed timeously and that all required schedules have been completed and submitted.
    • Assist with the SA tax returns and ensure it is completed timeously and that all required schedules have been completed and submitted.
    • Manage the relationship with SARS and respond to SARS queries.
    • Manage and deal with tax advisors.
    • Manage the group’s efiling profile.
    • Ad hoc assistance where required.
    • Reconcile tax general ledger accounts.
    • Assist with providing analytical evidence of group tax compliance. Continuously monitor systems and processes, including change initiatives and training, to ensure compliance.
    • Maintain up-to-date, detailed knowledge of trends and changes in SA Tax legislation by reading, regular attendance of professional courses, workshops, etc.
    • Assist with annually updating the transfer pricing documents for each of the African subsidiaries. And performing the detailed tax return TP reconciliations required.
    • Managing the weekly tax technical meetings.
    • Assist with the yearend process for income tax and VAT.

    KEY COMPETENCIES

    Technical Skills:

    • BComm (Accounting) it would be advantageous to also have a Higher diploma in taxation
    • Understanding of the tax legislation
    • Understanding of IFRS/GAAP
    • Preferably tax compliance experience.
