The Equitable Education and Economies (EEE) division, at the HSRC, is looking to appoint 12 Youth Steering Committee Members for a period of 5 years to be based in any of the 12 focus countries (Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Romania, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, or Vietnam) of a research programme commencing 1 February 2024.
The project for which this appointment is to be made is called U’Good!? and aims to test and further develop relational approaches to wellbeing (RWB); and generate empirical insights into key contemporary challenges to young people’s wellbeing, and how they are addressing these.
Through the adoption of a RWB framework, it embraces people-centred, collaborative, and participatory approaches to conducting research, generating insights into how the relational aspect of multiple domains may make contributions to well-being.
The programme is structured into four thematic areas that act as entry points for investigations on the wellbeing of Young People: Livelihoods, Climate change, Digitalisation and Mental Health. An important component of the project advisory group is a Youth Steering Committee comprised of 12 young people representing organisations, projects, or communities of young people across the focus countries of the research call. The successful applicants will be appointed on Freelance contracts.

Minimum Requirements
Key requirements:
- Must be between 18 – 30 years of age.
- Resident in any of the 12 focus countries of the research call: Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Romania, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, or Vietnam.
- Must have access to a reliable, high-quality, and stable internet.
- Must have access to remote conferencing facilities/software such as Zoom.
- Must be available to travel to attend a minimum of 3 research project conferences.
- Experience in youth and civic engagement work with a willingness to learn.
- Some exposure to multi-stakeholder and/or multi-country engagement would be an advantage.
- Documented leadership experience.
- Writing and presentation skills.
- Availability to contribute to the programme over a 5-year period as a freelancer.
- Competency in computer programmes such as Word, OneDrive, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Proactive with a problem-solving mindset, the ability to multi-task and with great attention to detail.
- Willingness to build capacity to work in a multi-cultural context and meet deadlines.
- Proficient in English.
Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Document the process of doing relational research focused on young people.
- Provide comment and input reflective of the experiences of young people from your country context.
- Support the decision-making process on the Expression of Interest (EOIs) and the selection of funded projects.
- Form an important part of the Community of Practice (CoP) and guide its development and activities to remain youth focused.
- Provide guidance on priority areas and topics that are youth focused.
- Address any knowledge gaps as they might emerge through the research implementation as it pertains to collaboration and partnership building with young people; and
- Act as ambassadors for the programme internationally.
- Attend CoP events (a minimum of 3 per annum) to be offered in a hybrid (in-person and online) format.
- Attend CoP meetings (1 per annum) to be offered in a hybrid (in-person and online) format.
- Attend project conferences in person (3 over the course of the programme)
