    Beverage and Office Attendant

    Job Purpose

    • To provide professional, courteous, and hygienic beverage and refreshment services to employees and visitors; maintain cleanliness and order in designated kitchen and break rooms.
    • The role supports the operation of the office by maintaining kitchen facilities and break rooms, setting up and clearing meeting rooms, and monitoring stock levels.

    Key Resposibilities

    • Provide friendly, courteous, professional and efficient service to staff and visitors.
    • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of kitchen and break rooms throughout the day
    • Wash, dry, and correctly store dishes, cups, and utensils.
    • Prepare and serve refreshments (e.g. coffee and tea) to staff and visitors.
    • Set up and clear meeting rooms before, during and after meetings, workshops, etc.
    • Collect used cups and utensils from offices during the day.
    • Dispose of waste responsibly and adhere to sanitation standards.
    • Assist with light catering duties when required.
    • Report equipment malfunctions or shortages to Supervisor promptly.
    • Adhere to all ERWAT policies and procedures.
    • Assist with the cleaning of any other areas within the office building.
    • Report stock levels and advise the Supervisor timeously when replenishment is required to maintain sufficient stock.

    Process Controller

    Job Purpose 

    • Responsible for the 24-hour operation of wastewater treatment plants or treatment modules to ensure discharge or effluent and disposal of sludge according to License conditions. 

    Key responsibilities 

    Operational Management Effectiveness

    • Ensure that al solutions of chemicals are handled safely according to standard operating procedures and that the dosing are performed efficiently and cost effectively in accordance with compliance and performance of all modules/plants.
    • Ensure that equipment used at inlet works to remove grit and rags from wastewater stream perform effectively according to operating manuals and SOP's.
    • Ensure control of aeration, internal recirculation and wasting by means of operating parameters such as sludge age, internal recycles and dissolved oxygen levels for optimal nutrient removal on all modules or plants as per SOP's
    • Prepare schedules for and control frequency and duration of sludge draw off from various modules (primary sedimentation tanks, thickeners, humus tanks, DAF, digesters and reactors) as per SOP's.
    • Monitor and ensure performance of digesters (Heating and mixing), belt-press and DAF units on all modules/plants as per SOP's.
    • Ensure that decanting of supernatant from digesters and drying beds to reduce the volume of sludge for disposal to acceptable levels are performed.
    • Evaluate all processes and equipment of modules or plants and take corrective action where needed as per SOP's.
    • Prepare schedules for disposal, removal of dried sludge or compost from sludge lands or drying beds on the plants as per SOP's.
    • Coordinate and record all process changes of modules or plants. 

    Financial Effectiveness 

    • Assist with controlling variable costs through optimization and efficient operation of all modules.
    • Assist in identifying financial deviation of the approved budget, which might occur as a result of plant operation anomalies.

    Quality Effectiveness

    • Document and implement contingency plans according to the Incident Management Protocol for situations such as high inflows, flooding, power failures, industrial spillages or equipment failures to prevent pollution or damage to equipment or harm to any person
    • Maintain quality control management
    • Coordinate sampling and liaise with laboratory to perform ad hoc sampling when required.
    • Interpret lab results to identify trends and adjust processes pro-
    • Adjust processes or operational procedures to ensure compliance with all legislation and improved efficiencies/optimization.
    • Assist in communicating biosolids schedule with Farmers and submit disposal cost breakdown.
    • Assist in ensuring biosolids loads to farmers are captured correctly and weekly trucks spot check is performed before leaving site
    • Assist in liaising with Maintenance department on maintenance, and assist with overseeing installation, of new equipment and repair of Assets
    • Perform monthly polyelectrolyte in-house tests to ensure quality product is received and dewatering is optimized by analyzing % moisture of cake.
    • Ensure on-site solar drying is performed efficiently whilst minimising the creation of nuisance odours, fly breeding and environmental pollution.

    Administrative Effectiveness

    • Compile daily/weekly/monthly and quarterly reports in terms of process performance and efficiencies and compliance of
    • Ensure shift handover is done
    • Ensure recording and reporting timeously levels and/or mass of bulk chemicals such as ferric chloride, Polyelectrolyte and
    • Ensure recording and reporting of all meter readings to determine flow rates, sump levels, operation of equipment, temperatures, pressures, dissolved oxygen.
    • Produce clear, concise written schedules to
    • Report any deviations or breakdowns of plant/process/equipment performance according to ERWAT communications protocol.
    • Assist with compiling all documentation in support of the Green Drop program.

    Subordinate Effectiveness

    • Keep all subordinates on shift informed about process adjustments and performance of plant.
    • Assist with training of subordinates and in-service trainees and garduates 
    • Ensure time and attendance register are completed daily and report any absence of work /short time of shift team to snr PC/Manager daily

    Safety/ Health, Environmental requirements and Risk

    • Enforce compliance with OHS Act and applicable Regulations, ERWAT safety rules, procedures, signs and instructions to prevent incidents of health and safety.
    • Contribute to good housekeeping by keeping plant and workstation clean and tidy.
    • Report any unsafe conditions/safety hazards on the plant
    • Report any incidents /accidents and near misses
    • Assist with compiling of IMP,SOP’s and ensure training of subordinates and implementation thereof
    • Issue Permit to Work in line with the Safety
    • Conduct daily toolbox talks and inform subordinates with respect to any risks.
    • Assist with identification of new emerging operational or safety risks and ensure controls are enforced in mitigation thereof.
    • Implement any mitigation plans/controls/recommendations or findings of any audits performed on the plant

    Minimum Requirements 

    • Wastewater Treatment NQF 4 and 8 years' experience of which 2 years is at Grade B4.

    OR

    • National Diploma, National Technical Diploma, NTC VI or BSc Degree (all in appropriate field) and 2 years' experience at Grade B4 (excluding In-service training)

    Special Requirements 

    • Registration with DWS as a minimum class IV process controller
    • Drivers license

    • Cut grass in designated areas on the property with a slasher to ensure aesthetically acceptable, safe and risk free environment
    • Plough sludge lands to control pollution of surface run-off, prevent erosion, control veld fires and weed
    • Move equipment to designated areas as required by Senior Process Controller for various tasks  

    Team Effectiveness 

    • Plan and arrange leave and time-off in consultation with team leader and fellow workers to ensure sustainable flow of work
    • Plan work in consultation with team  leader and fellow workers to ensure assistance as required

    Safety Effectiveness

    Minimum Requirements

    Job Content

    Description of Job

    Operational Management Effectiveness

    • Operate equipment to draw off sludge from primary sludge tanks clarifiers and humus tanks according to operating manual and SOP’s.
    • Operate equipment at inlet works to remove grit and rags effectively from waste water stream according to operating manuals and SOP’s.
    • Transfer sludge from various pumping stations to digesters, sludge lands, drying beds or other designated areas according to operating manuals and SOP’s.
    • Operate sand filters according to operating manuals and SOP’s.
    • Operate sludge thickeners and DAF units according to operating manuals and SOP’s.
    • Operate sludge dewatering equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures.
    • Operate disinfection system including the change of chlorine cylinders according to safe work procedures and SOP’s.
    • Ensure that solutions of chemicals such as (ferric chloride, chlorine and DBF) are handled safely according to standard operating procedures and that the dosing are performed efficiently in accordance with compliance and performance of all modules/plants.
    • Operate ferric chloride dosing equipment according to standard operating procedures.
    • Decant supernatant from digesters and drying beds to reduce the volume of sludge for disposal to acceptable levels
    • Ensure efficient and safe removal of dried/dewatered sludge from belt-presses, drying beds, sludge lagoons, or paddies and stockpile in dedicated areas.
    • Take meter readings such as flows, DO levels, and operating hours of equipment
    • Complete daily plant log sheets

    • Operators Certificate/Wastewater Treatment Practice NQF 3 and 7 years’ experience of which 2 years is at Grade B2

    • Wastewater Treatment practice NQF 4 and 3 years’ experience of which 2 years is at Grade B2

    OR

    • BSc Degree, National Diploma, National Technical Diploma, NTC VI (All in appropriate field) and 1-year experience (excluding in-service training).

    OR

    • Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) and 15 years relevant experience

    Special Requirements

    • Registration with DWS as a minimum class III process controller
    • Driver’s license

    Assistant Operator

    Job content 

    • Assist to ensure that the wastewater treatment plants are operational 24-hours and that the discharge of effluent and disposal of sludge is treated according to ERWAT procedures.

    Description of Job

    Operational Management Effectiveness

    • Keep inlet works clean by effectively removing rags and grit in the wastewater stream according to Standard Operating Procedures and schedules including monitoring and reporting of malfunctioning equipment.
    • Removal of scum and scrubbing of the tank walls, launders and weirs on the PST’s, Humus Tanks, CCT and Clarifiers to ensure continuous operation within set performance standards, hygienic and aesthetically acceptable conditions.
    • Assist in transferring sludge from various pumping stations to digesters, sludge lands, drying beds or other designated areas according to Standard Operating Procedures and schedule.
    • Keep the bio-filter operating effectively by unblocking filter arm nozzles and prevent ponding by flushing and turning of the filter media to ensure even/equal flow distribution on the filter according to Standard Operating Procedures and schedules.
    • Cleaning and removal of spillages.
    • Removal of dry sludge from the drying beds and surrounding areas including removal of vegetation and raking of the drying beds to ensure optimum performance.
    • Assist with the changing of chlorine cylinders according to safe working procedures.
    • Cleaning of all process units, pump stations and surrounding areas.
    • Assist in operating sludge dewatering equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures and schedules.
    • Assist in make-up polymer as per Standard Operations Procedures.
    • Assist in taking meter and instrument readings as per arranged schedules and record on prescribe forms.
    • Reporting any faulty equipment and any incident (abnormal plant conditions) to the Shift leader.
    • Assist in taking samples as per schedule and when needed.
    • Assist in operating sludge thickeners and DAF units according to operating manuals and SOP’s.
    • Assist in operating/performing daily routine checks on all process units.
    • Assist with the controlling of sludge irrigation and run-off from sludge lands.
    • Assist with the logging of entries into the logbook and check sheets.

    Safety/ Health and Environmental requirements

    • Observe all safety rules (wearing of PPE at all times), Standard Operating Procedures, signs and instructions to prevent incidents related to health and safety.
    • Report all incidents including near misses to the Shift leader.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Recognized Prior Learning (RPL) and 15 years’ experience working for ERWAT Operations Department as a General Worker.

    OR

    • Grade 8 / Operators Certificate or Wastewater Treatment Practice NQF L2 and 3-years relevant experience

    Special requirements 

    • Registration with DWS as a minimum class 1 process controller
    • Basic operations, services, and activities of a wastewater treatment plant.
