    South African Sign Language Interpreter (AD09)

    Main Purpose:

    • Support Deaf students by providing South African Sign Language interpreting services during lectures and relevant events/meetings. Additional duties include conversion of lecture content into an accessible format for D/deaf and print-impaired students (This includes students with visual impairments and dyslexia).

    Brief Description        
    Key Responsibilities:

    • Interpret lectures/tutorials/meetings, etc. for D/deaf students
    • Education and Awareness drives to broaden the knowledge of the Wits community about students with disabilities
    • Assist with the conversion of study material into an accessible format for Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and print-impaired students

    Lecturer (Exposure Science)

    Qualifications

    • At least a master’s degree in environmental sciences, exposure science, occupational hygiene, chemical/ ventilation engineering, or related field.

    Experience

    • Experience in conducting research, demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications.  
    • Publication of at least two scientific papers in accredited peer-reviewed journals.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) is seeking applicants for the position of Director of the Centre for Learning on Evaluation and Results Anglophone Africa (CLEAR-AA). The Centre is grant- and donor-funded and located under the Wits School of Governance in the Faculty of Commerce, Law & Management. The Centre is an implementing partner of the Global Evaluation Initiative and one of six regional Centres around the Globe with a remit to support the development of local demand for and practice of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E).     Head of School 1.01

    Brief Description        
    The leadership of this School offers the incumbent an opportunity to build on the School’s vision for Computer Science and Applied Mathematics in South Africa and the continent. This vision should include innovations in teaching and research across a wide range of topics to meet the needs of a changing world. The Head of School will be expected to provide academic vision and leadership, as well as managerial coordination of the various programmes required to maintain and build the School’s position of academic excellence in research, teaching, and community engagement. The Head of School must have academic and/or professional standing to foster the respect and confidence of the members of the School and must possess high-level leadership skills to enact a shared strategic vision for the School. Teaching courses at an appropriate level during the term of office is expected, and the Head must continue with research activities and postgraduate student supervision.

    • The Head is responsible for the administration of the School. This includes coordinating academic activities in teaching, research and postgraduate training, and human resource activities in recruitment and management, and financial and infrastructure resource management. The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed term of five years, with the possibility of a second and final term following due process, and will be eligible for a position in the School at the appropriate academic rank, as a member of the academic staff, after the period served as Head. The Head of School reports to the Dean of Science and is a member of the Faculty Executive, chaired by the Dean of Science, and contributes to the overall strategic and operational management of the Faculty of Science.     Requirements & Competencies

    • A PhD in Geophysics, Geosciences, or a related Electrical Engineering discipline with an emerging research track record.
    • Some experience in managing geophysical instrumentation, ideally including seismic, electromagnetic, and potential field methods.
    • Sound knowledge of electronics, signal processing, and instrumentation engineering principles.
    • Experience with geodata processing and management platforms, such as SEG-Y, GIS systems, Earthworm, or ObsPy, and programming in Python, MATLAB, or similar environments.
    • Experience and familiarity in the creation and maintenance of integrated relational geodatasets and geodatabases across a wide array of platforms (e.g., Microsoft Access, Micromine, Leapfrog, Datamine, etc) and programming in those particular standards (i.e. VBA, SQL, Python).
    • Demonstrated ability to train and supervise students, particularly in field methods and instrumentation use.
    • Familiarity with computing environments and IT infrastructure (e.g., managing Linux- and PC-based computing clusters or cloud-based data systems).

Teaching experience in Econometrics and international finance is required. Further, proficiency in R along with ability to teach econometrics using R Statistical Software is essential.     Academic Head of Department

    • We seek a distinguished academic leader and expert in obstetrics and gynaecology or one of its subspecialties who demonstrates excellence across clinical service, teaching, research, and academic administration. The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership, drive innovation, and foster a culture of excellence aligned with the strategic goals of the University of the Witwatersrand, the School of Clinical Medicine, and the Faculty of Health Sciences.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide strategic and academic leadership to position the department as a centre of excellence.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor academic programmes aligned with the university’s teaching and learning strategy.
    • Oversee curriculum development, ensure high-quality teaching, and maintain rigorous academic standards.
    • Promote and grow research activity, foster partnerships, and support postgraduate supervision and research training.
    • Foster a collaborative and inclusive departmental culture through transparent decision-making and active consultation with staff.
    • Manage human, financial, and infrastructural resources efficiently to achieve departmental and school goals.
    • Represent the department within the School Executive Committee and participate actively in broader faculty governance.
    • Promote stakeholder engagement, social responsibility, and academic collaboration with internal and external partners.
    • Provide support and oversight to academic divisions within the department.
    • Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration across clinical and teaching platforms.
    • Uphold service delivery standards and quality assurance across all department activities.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Registration as a Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
    • At least 10 years’ experience in obstetrics and gynaecology, with demonstrated academic and clinical leadership.
    • Proven research excellence, including a PhD or substantial publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
    • Significant experience in university administration at a senior level.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, manage change, and build academic capacity.
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and managerial skills.
    • Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, Adjunct Professor, or Full Professor per Wits academic criteria.

    Additional Information

    • This is a University appointment under standard Wits terms and conditions, with remuneration commensurate with a Clinical Head of Department position.
    • The incumbent will be permitted to conduct clinical work within their area of expertise for no more than 20% of their time.
    • Should there not be a candidate able to undertake the post on a permanent basis under University terms of employment, a joint-staff member may be appointed subject to agreement with the Gauteng Department of Health or delegated authority.
