    Lecturer: Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) - (2147)

    • A vacancy exists in the department for a Lecturer to teach Mathematics in the Extended Curriculum Programme.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key areas:

    • Facilitate learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
    • Conduct research and publish on topics related to Mathematics or Mathematics Education
    • Undertake undergraduate and/or postgraduate supervision
    • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
    • Undertake community engagement and outreach

    Minimum Requirements

    • MSc in Mathematics and currently registered for a PhD with clear completion plan
    • Demonstrated teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels
    • A record of successful postgraduate supervision at the honours level
    • Evidence of research output in the form of a research publication(s) in accredited journals

    Advantageous criteria:

    • Experience in teaching mathematics in an Extended Curriculum Progamme
    • Experience in teaching mathematics and applied mathematics beyond first-year
    • Experience in educational or academic development work
    • Experience in working in a team

    Associate Professor - (2110)

    • The Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM) is a self-funded flagship research entity within the Department of Biotechnology. Renowned for advancing high-impact, interdisciplinary research in microbial biotechnology and bioinnovation, IMBM’s work is strategically aligned with both national imperatives and global scientific frontiers. The Institute contributes meaningfully to undergraduate teaching, while playing a central role in postgraduate training, infrastructure stewardship, and the cultivation of research excellence. Through cutting-edge “omics” approaches and industry-driven microbial technologies, IMBM drives UWC’s strategic research agenda via well-established national and international collaborations. The post is available from 1 April 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

    • Facilitate learning and teaching at undergraduate levels in biochemistry
    • Undertake curriculum development and assessment
    • Lead independent high-impact research initiatives aligned with the institute’s strategic focus areas, enhancing international visibility and academic reputation  
    • Undertake undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral supervision in microbial biotechnology contributing to research productivity and capacity building
    • Provide academic leadership and administration
    • Participate in community engagement and outreach
    • Contribute meaningfully to the financial sustainability of the IMBM beyond the scope of individual research projects. This includes securing external and donor funding to support operational and strategic activities, cultivating industry partnerships, leading collaborative grant initiatives, and advancing income-generating platforms such as core research facilities, contract research services, and intellectual property commercialization.
    • Fulfil any other duties as assigned by the IMBM Director

    Minimum Requirements

    • PhD in the field of Microbiology, Biochemistry or a closely related discipline
    • Demonstrated experience in facilitating learning and teaching within the field of biotechnology, with a particular emphasis on Biochemistry
    • A strong record of quality, internationally peer reviewed publications in the field of microbial biotechnology
    • An excellent record of successful postgraduate supervision at MSc and PhD level
    • A demonstrated track record of securing competitive funding from diverse external sources as the principal investigator
    • Evidence of expertise, national standing, and an international presence in the field of microbial biotechnology
    • The integration of community engagement with learning and teaching and/or research

    Required competencies:

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
    • Presentation and facilitation skills
    • Adaptability, buy-in and leadership as a senior member of a diverse and self-funded research environment

    Manager: Student Recruitment - (2130)

    Reporting to the Director of the Student Enrolment Management Unit, the successful applicant will be responsible for the following areas:

    • Provide support to the Director with regard to the compilation and evaluation of student recruitment plans and strategies.
    • Manage and monitor the implementation of selected recruitment strategies and provide formal monitoring and review reports.
    • Manage and coordinate promotional activity for out-bound school visits, career exhibitions and other recruitment and career activities as per the recruitment plan.
    • Advise on programmes on offer and highlight admission requirements during career activities.
    • Enquiry management, including the referral of and enhancing of enquiry systems in conjunction with the Student Recruitment Administrator.
    • Assist with all other inbound student recruitment activities as and when necessary – must have a driver’s licence and be able to undertake and/ or participate in in and out of country travelling.
    • Network with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
    • Contribute to an ethos of collaboration, teamwork and excellence in the Unit.

    Minimum requirements:

    • A relevant Bachelor’s degree or a relevant equivalent qualification at NQF 7
    • A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience

    Required competencies:

    • Proficiency with digital media is a strong requirement
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Self-motivated and with the ability to take initiative
    • Flexibility to adapt and work in a range of varying environments and with different people, tasks and responsibilities
    • The ability to work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
