    Technical Assistant Maintenance

    • The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of experienced and reliable individual to assist the Senior Artisan/Principal Supervisor to ensure that all projects and maintenance requests are completed according to specifications within the budget and time frames using quality assurance standards.
    • This position requires a Grade 10, Job Specific Qualification, or equivalent qualification at NQF 2 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field, or Grade 12, Job Specific Qualification, or equivalent qualification at NQF 4 with 3 years of work experience in the relevant field. A Higher Education Qualification, Job Specific Qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 5 will be an added advantage.
    • The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position:  exposure  in performing solid waste management, fence work, minor building repairs, painting, varnishing, signage installations and machinery work; be in possession of a valid driver’s license Code B; willingness to learn and take instructions; ability to work in a team and independently; good communication skills; and basic relevant skills training. The candidate must be trained in bricklaying, blockwork and masonry work.

    The responsibilities include:

    • Assist in operational functions, and projects;
    • Assist in the completion of generalist tasks;
    • Assist in administrative task; and
    • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety policy.

The candidate must have experience in performing plumbing maintenance, irrigation system repairs, minor building repairs, painting, varnishing, carpentry and machinery work will be an added advantage.

    Horticulturist

    • The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a passionate and self-motivated individual to fulfill a key Horticultural role by leading the development and maintenance of the Proteaceae and Restionaceae display garden areas and associated living collections at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
    • This position requires a degree in Horticulture or equivalent relevant qualification at NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification in Horticulture or equivalent at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years’ experience in the relevant field of Horticulture, 3 years of which must be in a supervisory position(s) as a practicing Horticulturist.
    • The position is responsible for curating and cultivating  a wide range of Protea and Restio genera with the following key competencies for the candidate to be successful in this position: excellent knowledge and understanding of indigenous horticulture and conservation are essential; knowledge of propagation procedures, protocols and processes, practical experience and knowledge of propagation facilities, knowledge of field collecting and plant introduction and care, competent in long term curation and maintenance of living plant collections, understanding landscaping using fynbos and natural design elements, leading and managing a team of conservation workers in the garden and nursery collections, knowledgeable and experience with working with conservation stakeholders, advanced planning, organizing, and problem solving skills; ability to work under pressure whilst being safety conscious; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook) will be advantageous. The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience

    Key Performance Responsibilities include:

    • Conduct garden display and living collections operations planning, maintenance & development
    • Lead the management of people and maintain high levels of performance
    • Manage the coordination of curation of living collections in both the garden and collections nursery
    • Promote & participate in horticultural, plant conservation, and research projects
    • Conduct planning, coordination and implementation of projects to promote the mission of SANBI and Kirstenbosch

    Administration Officer: National Botanical Garden

    • The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to render administrative support services to the operations of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.
    • This position requires a national diploma or advanced certificate, in Office Administration, Public Administration or equivalent and relevant qualification with NQF 6. Advanced diploma or degree in Office Administration, Public Administration or equivalent with NQF 7.  A degree or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be and added advantage. 4 year’s work experience in the relevant field when having a National Diploma or Advanced Certificate or equivalent with NQF 6- or 2-years’ work experience in the relevant field when having and Advanced certificate, or equivalent qualification with NQF 7 of which 1 year must be in office management and administration, procurement, logistics, projects and contract management, financial management, record keeping and report writing as well as various day to day planning and organising of tasks.
    • The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive knowledge of legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks related to office administration, procurement, logistics, project and event management is essential; strict adherence to policies, procedures, processes, governance, compliance and confidentiality and an in-depth knowledge of Public Finance Management Act, and Treasury Regulations is essential; advanced planning, organizing, and problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook) will be advantageous. The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential. 

    Key Performance Responsibilities include:

    • Provide garden administration;
    • Assist with project, financial and administration duties;
    • Ensure effective management of resources, assets;
    • Ensure effective management of human resources, marketing and communication and customer services; and
    • Public relations, risk and safety; and customer service.
