    Events and Operations Officer: Parent Power and Teachers CAN

    Role

    Parents and teachers play a critical role in the educational journey of South Africa’s children. When empowered, they are able to use their agency to shape the education system and ultimately the learning experience of South African children.

    With that in mind, the DG Murray Trust is incubating two initiatives focused on building the agency of parents and teachers.

    The Parent Power Initiative (Parent Power) aims to support parents to –

    • partner with schools to ensure quality education for their children and accountability for their learning;
    • build their shared identity as valued and active stakeholders in children’s education; and
    • leverage “ordinary magic” for the benefit of their children.

    The Teachers’ Change Agent Network (Teachers CAN) seeks to build an empowered network of young teachers who -

    • are driven by the goal of enabling all learners to reach their potential and
    • find a common identity rooted in professionalism, creativity and reimagining of the status quo.

    We are recruiting an Events and Operations Officer to work across the two initiatives.

    Minimum requirements

    At a minimum, the candidate must have:

    • a post-school qualification – in business administration or related field;
    • computer literacy, with proficiency in MS Suite, particularly Excel;
    • good communication skills both orally and written and;
    • detail orientated;
    • 2-5 years of working experience.

    Additional qualifications or experience that will be an added advantage

    The ideal candidate has the following attributes:

    • are fluent in two or more South African languages;
    • are able to take initiative and use judgement;
    • are a skilful problem solver;
    • are respectful of deadlines;
    • are able to work well within a team.

    Responsibilities

    As the Events and Operations Officer supporting Parent Power and Teachers CAN, the successful candidate will take on the following responsibilities:

    • Design and implement operations systems and processes.
    • Provide administrative and logistical support for Parent Power and Teachers CAN
    • Provide financial and operational support for Parent Power and Teachers CAN
    • Lead events management for both initiatives.
    • Provide the team with operational updates.

    Network Mobiliser: Embrace

    Role

    This is a Cape Town-based post, with frequent domestic travel required.

As a movement that advocates for the priorities of early motherhood; they value and celebrate motherhood and mothers, and the critical role they have to play socially, economically and politically.     Minimum requirements

    • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field
    • A minimum of three years’ experience with community mobilisation or facilitation work
    • Proven track record of project management
    • Valid South African driver’s licence
    • Experience in social activism and development work

    The ideal candidate should:

    • Be clearly aligned with the vision and mission of Embrace
    • Have a proven track record of grassroots community engagements
    • Be a confident public speaker and a clear communicator
    • Enjoy local travel
    • Be able to manage a project budget and financial record-keeping
    • Have strong group organising and facilitation skills
    • Be fluent in English and at least one additional South African language
    • Have a passion for social justice, especially on issues of human rights and gender equity, and want to drive change in South Africa.

    Responsibilities

    • Work with the Embrace team to develop a strategic plan for the Embrace network over the next 2 – 5 years
    • Manage a database of existing and potential network members
    • Provide regular reports on the activities and growth of the network
    • Work with the Communications team to develop resources for and updates to the network
    • Travel to meet with network members, where necessary
    • Host regular virtual check-ins with groups of network members
    • Organise local events to build up and support the network

    Project Administrator: Embrace

    Minimum requirements

    • A Matric certificate
    • Junior-level experience in office administration and logistics assistance
    • Experience in use of Microsoft Office software suite, especially Excel
    • Experience in WordPress not required but advantageous

    Responsibilities

    • Manage logistics arrangements as directed by the operations manager (e.g. booking flights, ground transfers, sourcing quotes)
    • Provide support in planning and implementing project events
    • Liaising directly with Embrace Mamandla fellows with respect to logistical arrangements for fellowship immersions and engagements
    • Keeping updated stock register of Embrace collateral and other resources (e.g. stationery, publication copies)
    • Taking minutes at team meetings and other engagements
    • Updating Embrace’s register of contractors and service providers
    • Sourcing estimates and quotes from service providers
    • Where directed, updating Embrace expenditure records
