    Work Experience Intern - Somkhele

    Description

    • The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is recruiting a Work Experience Intern. The incumbent will undergo training and gain practical experience in a broad range of pre-analytical activities at the AHRI Clinical Laboratory in Somkhele needed to manage the life cycle of biological specimens. Duties include receiving, distribution, retrieval and storage of biospecimens. Additional duties include biospecimen and stock inventory management, preparation of specimen kits, maintenance of study specific documentation and quality control checks of physical and electronic laboratory records, forms and documents.

    Overview of Duties

    • Assist with day-to-day activities involving biospecimen receiving, distribution, storage and retrieval for various studies being conducted by AHRI.
    • Enter and maintain sample information into the laboratory’s data management system for all relevant associated data, cold storage location, aliquots and distribution.
    • Assist with preparation of kits for specimen collection.
    • Assist with logistical co-ordination of specimens from clinical sites to the Clinical Laboratory and from the Clinical Laboratory to other internal and external laboratories.
    • Document management (electronic and hard copy).
    • General housekeeping and maintenance of laboratory, cryogenic equipment and facilities.
    • Storage and inventory management of specimens in the Biorepository.
    • Retrieval of specimens.
    • Compliance with Health and Safety and Company policies and procedures as well as GCLP/ISO15189 requirements.
    • Assist with other laboratory related tasks as required and directed by her line manager or other senior managers in the laboratory.
    • Work across sites if required and practically possible.

    Requirements

    Minimum Requirements

    • The candidate must be enrolled at an Institution of Higher learning for Biomedical Sciences, Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Medical Sciences or any other related Degree/Diploma.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Senior certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.

    Minimum Experience

    • Not applicable

    Knowledge and Abilities

    • Knowledge of the scientific research processes

    Advantageous

    • Proficient with computers with working knowledge of MS Office.

    Skills Required

    • Active listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
    • Willingness to learn.
    • Social Perceptiveness – Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
    • Time Management – Managing one’s own time and the time of others, and ability to prioritise multiple tasks.
    • Ability to work in a team.

    Research Study Coordinator - Mtubatuba

    Description

    •  The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for the implementation of the TB surveillance Project in various clinics and the community under the AHRI Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS). The incumbent will develop, implement, and coordinate research and administrative procedures for the successful management of the TB surveillance Project. The incumbent will also, when required, provide clinical care to research participants and ensure clinical governance standards are met in line with Good Clinical Practice guidelines. The role requires a professional with comprehensive technical knowledge related to TB research, who has an efficient and systematic approach, with the capacity to grow, learn and multitask

    Requirements

    Minimum Qualification

    • Degree in Nursing, Clinical Medical Practice or Social Science
    • Computer Literacy
    • Valid driver’s license. Must be a confident driver.
    • Written and spoken fluency in English and isiZulu
    • Understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methods

    Minimum Experience

    • Experience in clinical research.
    • A minimum of 2-3years’ experience coordinating a project and supervising junior staff members.
