Typical Responsibilities

• Data management, field layout, mapping and Technical workflow optimization for inbred line management
• Support maize breeding programs, maintains parental material nurseries and coordinates parent experiments across Eastern, Southern and Central Africa
• Inventory management: Ensure inventory is managed, targeted quantities of seed according to metrics is produced, stored and discarded. Monitoring and management of insect storage pests
• Reporting: Continuous reporting and consulting on programme status. Yearly reporting on status of targeted metrics. Interaction with Integrated Operations and Parent Seed Groups
• Implement, evaluate and train RMS quality management processes in the team
• Commitment to the core values of Ethics, Safety, Environmental stewardship and Respect for people
• Remains current on new, technology by participating in career development training, meetings and activities
• Confers with supervisor on unusual matters
• Confers with Research Scientists, Integrated Operations and Parent Seed
• Supervises work of seasonal employees and occasionally regular employees. This includes assigning, checking, correcting, demonstrating procedures/processes, and providing input on performance evaluation.
• Works on problems that are of limited complexity
• Analysis of data or situation requires review of identifiable factors.
• Exercises limited independent judgment within well-defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions
• Strong numerical skills, attention to detail, work in a bilingual environment (English and Zulu)

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• B.Sc. + 5 years’ experience (Preferably M.Sc. + 2 years’ experience)
• Agriculture, Plant breeding/Genetics, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, Physiology, Soil Science
• Drivers licence, working knowledge of MS Office suite
• 2 to 5 years’ experience in maize seed production or plant breeding/molecular biology
• Experience in Agriculture

Basic Purpose

• Being part of the team providing technical support to our customers and prospects in the region
• Support application specialists and sales managers on questions related to baking procedures and formulations
• Visit customers together with the Application Specialists and build a network in the local bakery industry
• Provide knowledge on our solutions to customers in line with strategy and priorities
• Protect existing business by solving ad hoc technical issues with N&H solutions at customers/prospects
• Scout for new opportunities at existing and potential new customers
• Feed market information to business to support the innovation pipeline
• Participate in selected projects relevant for the region

Key Responsibilities And Tasks

• Responsible for the daily work in the bakery plant facilities including maintenance and stock-keeping and purchasing
• Plan and conduct baking trials in agreement with the Application Specialists
• Perform follow up evaluation/analysis in collaboration with the Application Specialists
• Maintain and develop recipes and procedures relevant for the local market
• Provide technical and hands-on support to our customers in close cooperation with the Applications Specialists and SAFI Sales
• Have an understanding of the EMEA Bakery Industry plan and translate this into the daily interactions with customers and sales
• Support the application of solutions to customers in the industry in the defined geographic area
• Prioritise work for customers based on opportunities (Salesforce.com)
• Good IT-skills

Key Challenges/Success Criteria

• Make the technical support to customers a differentiator in the market to defend business and create new sales
• Use the SAFI Innovation network in EMEA to provide the best possible service and solutions to customers
• Efficient team work with EMEA Application Team and with Sales Managers
• Focus on the prioritised tasks as agreed with the Applications Specialists

Qualifications

• A Food Technologist/Science/Bio Chemistry qualification would be a minimum requirement and or minimum 5 years working experience from the bakery industry or from industries supplying the bakery industry
• Drivers License is a must
• Hands-on experience with various bakery applications and recipes is preferred
• Good command and working knowledge of spoken and written English required
• Must be able to travel in all designated countries of the region
• Commercial understanding
