    Employee Benefits Technical Specialist

    The Role

    As an Actuarial Specialist on the Retirement team, you will apply your technical analytical skills in the areas of retirement plan valuations, design, compliance, and risk and financial management for all types of retirement plans including defined benefit, defined contribution and retiree medical. You will participate on teams that help organizations of varying sizes align their retirement programs to their company objectives.
    In this role at WTW you will:

    •   Work closely with Fund valuators with regards to the actuarial valuations of pension, provident, and benefit funds. Although these are expected to be largely Defined Contribution in nature, there would also be exposure to Defined Benefit type valuations
    •   Analyze valuations of client company liabilities (such as benefit obligations and post-retirement medical aid) in terms of relevant accounting standards, legislation and/or guidance notes
    •   Prepare and check monthly or quarterly investment reports, unitization, and appropriate return calculations
    •   Play a suitable role in providing benefit consulting services which may include familiarity with current and proposed future legislation, adhoc projects and analyses of results, management of various fund tasks, secretarial functions, and ensuring the appropriate completion of client specific reporting
    •   Act as a liaison with clients and service providers
    •   Assist the staff where required, both in terms of more senior staff requiring support and junior staff requiring assistance or guidance
    •   Perform any other actuarial related tasks or calculations including but not limited to risk rebrokes, member calculations, projections, pension increases, and distributions

    The Requirements

    •   Bachelor’s degree with actuarial or any other financial/ mathematical specialization
    •   Ideally 5+ years of relevant pensions related experience, although strong candidates with less experience may be considered
    •   Good progress with actuarial exams (candidates who have not written or stopped with their actuarial exams would also be considered if relevant experience is demonstrated)
    •   Strong oral and written communication skills in English
    •   Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels
    •   Ability to respond to all communications effectively and in a timely manner
    •   Ability to work both independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
    •   Ability to manage several different projects concurrently and deliver on all of them
    •   Advanced experience with the MS Office Suite, specifically Excel, Word and Outlook (Access would be an advantage)
    •   Conscientious and detail focused

    Risk Management Consultant

    The Role

    As a Risk Management Consultant you will have the following responsibilities:

    •   Preparing underwriting survey (risk profile) reports to assist in the placement of client insurance programs. Reports will follow the WTW standard structure and contain key understanding of hazards at facilities and how the management team are controlling/ mitigating their impact
    •   Present risk improvements and loss calculations
    •   Develop risk improvement recommendations that are clear, appropriate and are fairly balanced between the interests of clients and insurers
    •   Calculate loss expectancies within company guidelines across a range of industries
    •   Undertake risk management audits
    •   Perform risk recommendation tracking t ascertain progress / compliance with previously issued risk improvement recommendations 
    •   Provide general advice on improving the risk management maturity within clients
    •   Ensure that all reports and other deliverables are prepared and ready in a timely manner
    •   Provision of technical support to clients and the broking team across a range of issues relating to good industry practices
    •   Clear understanding of the funding that supports engineering activities on individual accounts
    •   Ensuring that the proposed scope of engineering activities do not exceed the available fee amount unless agreed by Account Executive and client manager;
    •   Maintain technical competency in chosen industry sector and keep up-to-date with risk management developments (e.g. attend seminars, review technical publications, etc.)
    •   Represent WTW professionally on business trips and in meetings
    •   Compliance with all Willis Towers Watson company policies (e.g. Travel, Ethics, etc.)
    •   Any other duties commensurate with position or level of responsibility

    Job Expectations

    •   Time is generally split between the office and the site being inspected
    •   Conditions may be cramped, dusty and dirty, depending on the site. Surveyors may need to work at heights, for example on factory sites and in hazardous locations. Some sites cover a large area and could involve a lot of walking to conduct the survey
    •   As surveyors represent the company on site, smart dress is required but with appropriate changes/cover for site conditions. Hard hats, boots and other protective equipment may be needed for some visits and are provided by the insurance company or client
    •   Travel is required for site visits with overnight stays required
    •   Overseas travel may be required if working for a multinational company

     
    The Requirements

    •   Solid experience in a similar role with high level of Risk Engineering technical expertise
    •   Degree (or equivalent) and risk management qualifications or relevant accreditations                  
    •  5-10 years work experience in Mining
    •   Comfortable travelling extensively (e.g. 80-95 days per year) both within and / or outside of South Africa
    •   Self-starter, with good interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively relate to individuals at all levels – from site technicians up to company CEOs
    •   Proven ability to write detailed reports of a varied technical nature
    •   Experience of carrying out property risk surveys
    •   The flexibility to work in a range of physical locations, some uncomfortable
    •   Driver’s license and care is a necessity
    •   Negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to handle occasional conflict situations
    • Vaccination (including any subsequent booster injections that may be required) against the COVID-19  virus or any subsequent variant thereof, is a prerequisite for this role. You will be required to present proof that you have been fully vaccinated together with your application.
