    Technical Specialist

    The role 

    We are currently seeking a talented Technical Specialist in our Urban Development section in our Johannesburg office. The person will need to provide Architectural services and prepare documentation for projects as well as provide other appropriate Architectural support.

    With a track record of achievement in a similar role, you will have gained your experience in an engineering design consultancy and have a passion for building trusted relationships to drive positive change and win new work.

    Suitable applicants will be able to:

    •  Build SMEC's brand regionally & Nationally as a leading consultant with a strong reputation for innovation, technical excellence, quality, and project delivery
    • Assist the Regions to achieve sustainable growth of the group through targeted client relationship management and business development activity
    • When required, provide project governance, at project manager level, of project management in the group to achieve reliable project performance in terms of sophistication, timeliness, and quality
    • Support functional management to provide leadership to the employees in the group to ensure cohesion, optimal performance, resourcing, retention, and professional development

    REPORTS TO

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Interpret and understand the design brief

    Prepare and Produce documentation as per the Architectural Project Cycle (From Concept, Documentation, Construction to Close-Out);

    • Architectural Drawings
    • 3D models
    • Images
    • Presentations
    • Tender & Construction Documentation
    • As part of the team produce and develop documentation and drawings relevant to the task
    •      Work within a project programme
    • Liaison with External Consultants, Contractor/Site, Architects of Record as well as with the Client.
    • Able to work within a structured document management system and be accountable for upholding that system.
    • Goal of future registration with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession

    QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

    • M.Arch / M.Tech in Architecture

    • Experience in the use of Revit (. (A Skills test will be undertaken during the interview process), Adobe Photoshop & InDesign and other relevant software

    Architectural Technologist

    Professional Engineer/ Senior Engineer/ Technical Specialist

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide efficient drainage engineering solutions on multiple design projects, mainly road upgrade projects
    • Strong emphasis on hydrology and hydraulics assessment and design with a firm grasp on the latest and most relevant engineering design software, and using first principle hand calculations to check software results
    • Hydraulic analysis of bridges and major culverts. Knowledge of the processes, standards and applicable software is required
    • Provide technical solutions and develop appreciation of outcomes
    • Provide niche technical design expertise
    • Draft technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality
    • Able to present / represent their technical work as well as present service offering to potential clients and present technical work at technical conferences
    • Develop increased design ability and quality of project teams
    • Assign technical work to others and ensuring effective utilisation of team members
    • Able to check and take responsibility for the work of others
    • Plan and coordinate investigations and surveys
    • Ability to supervise Engineers, Technologist or Technicians in undertaking site visits and visual surveys

    • Clear knowledge of work procedures and ability to brief project team on them
    • Successful in identifying and following through on leads associated with additional work prospects on projects they are involved with

    • Minimum 7 years of practical experience in the relevant discipline, including quantity estimation and Tender Documentation
    • Relevant Professional Registration with ECSA
    • Experience in Bentley OpenRoads Designer/HEC-RAS/HydroCAD/UPD/ArcGIS/similar software will be greatly advantageous
    • Post graduate qualification in Water Engineering will be advantageous
    • Ability to identify and provide solutions to challenging engineering problems
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Ability to use analytical tools including commercial software
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
    • Must provide references from previous employers, peers and clients
    • Experience on SANRAL projects would be beneficial

    Senior Structural Engineer

    The role 

    We are currently seeking a talented Senior Structural Engineer in our Urban Development section in our Johannesburg office. The person will be responsible for providing professional services on projects within the Functional group and for providing feedback to the Finance Manager, Section Manager and Professionals / Consultants in the successful delivery of multidisciplinary projects.

    • Work allocation to the team members and ensuring effective utilisation of team members
    • Managing all or sections of projects
    • Submission of EOIs, RFQ’s, tenders and Proposals for the section and to provide input into large infrastructure projects as required

    RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor of Engineering degree/higher degree from an accredited university/college
    • Minimum 10 years of professional experience on complex building projects
    • Relevant Professional Registration
    • Post graduate qualification in Structures will be advantageous
    • Ability to effectively write reports
    • Professional delivery and appearance to ensure SMEC image is maintained
    • Courteous and business orientated manners when communicating with stakeholders to foster and promote good working relations
    • Co-operative and flexible work style to work in a team environment
    • Project financial knowledge, budgeting, forecasting and invoicing
    • Excellent communication skills
