    Doctoral Studentship

    About The Job

    • The CSIR has vacancy for Doctoral Studentship in the Laser Enabled Manufacturing research group under the Manufacturing Cluster within the Advanced Production and Security Division. The Doctoral student will need to conduct original research in Laser Shock Peening. The position is based in Pretoria

    Key Responsibilities

    • Prepare a research proposal to be approved by both the CSIR and a local University;
    • Conduct focused scientific R&D to solve complex and novel problems in the technology discipline aligned to key local industrial projects as per the project proposal;
    • Produce high quality internationally peer-reviewed publications based on the research topic;
    • Compile a Doctoral thesis and defend the work successfully;
    • Contribute to funding proposals and reports;
    • Contribute to extra activities that may be outside the scope of the doctoral research as per the needs of the research group. The amount of such work shall be limited to twenty percent of the total time. This may include engineering efforts, administrative tasks, and laboratory work.

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Master’s degree in mechanical, industrial, aeronautical, mechatronic, metallurgical, or materials engineering and applications can also be made while in the final year of the prior degree on condition that the degree is completed before the commencement the studentship;
    • Knowledge related to structural integrity, fatigue, residual stress, laser materials processing, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computer Aided Design (CAD), machine automation, advanced manufacturing technology;
    • An ability to critically solve problems, work independently;
    • Excellent English writing and oral communication skills;
    • An academic track record (presentation of work at conferences, publication of peer reviewed research papers)

    Masters Studentship

    About The Job

    • The CSIR has vacancy for Masters Studentship in the Laser Enabled Manufacturing research group under the Manufacturing Cluster within the Advanced Production and Security Division. The student will conduct research by developing simulation and modelling of Additive Manufacturing processes. Laser powder fusion will be the main technology used. The objective of the research is to develop numerical models for predicting microstructure, phase evolution, grain size, porosity and thermally induced mechanical properties caused by the AM process. In addition, comparison between the experimental and numerical models will be conducted. The position is based in Pretoria

    Key Responsibilities

    • Prepare research proposal to be approved by both the CSIR and the university;
    • Prepare written literature overview of the current state-of-the-art relevant to the research topic;
    • Perform original research to solve the open research problem that the student identified in his/her proposal;
    • Produce sufficient quantity and quality of peer-reviewed publications based on this research topic;
    • Compile the Master’s dissertation and defending the work successfully;
    • Contribute to extra activities that may be outside the scope of the master’s research as per the needs of the research group. The amount of such work shall be limited to twenty percent of the total time.

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • An Honours or equivalent degree in Physics or Materials Science.
    • Knowledge of Matlab, Python, C++, Abaqus, or Ansys.
    • Excellent experimental skills.
    • Enthusiastic and self-motivated individual who takes ownership and shows initiative.
    • Willingness to learn.
    • Good interpersonal and team skills;
    • Excellent English communication, presentation and writing skills;
