    Head of Department

    About the Job

    • The Department of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine invites suitably qualified applicants interested in being part of a dynamic, growing academic department, to apply for the post of Head of Department.
    • This post would be suitable for those with a commitment to academic excellence and educational leadership in a multi-disciplinary environment.
    • The Headship requires an individual with exceptional interpersonal skills, the capacity for innovative and original thinking, ability to exercise a high degree of personal initiative in organising his/her own responsibilities and a commitment to working to deadlines effectively and efficiently.

    Qualifications:

    • A Health care qualification registrable with the HPCSA,
    • A master’s degree in the relevant field (PhD is preferred);
    • Registration with the HPCSA;
    • Research and Teaching experience;
    • At least 7-10 years experience in university administration at a senior level are essential requirements; At least 5 years’ experience in management and administration in an academic environment, is an essential requirement;
    • The applicant must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect of the members of the profession;
    • The applicant should be at least at the Associate/Adjunct Professor, or be promotable to that academic level, in terms of the Wits qualifying criteria.

    Duties:

    • Strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in exercise science and sports medicine;
    • Develop and promote sport and exercise programmes across the teaching, research and service platforms.
    • Monitor and report on the adequacy and appropriate standard of teaching and learning;
    • Monitor and report on the adequacy and appropriate standard of research throughput.
    • Promote staff development and manage staff performance and assessment within the department;
    • Ensure sound Financial and Human Resources management;
    • Encourage collaboration between departments working across the teaching and service platforms;
    • Set norms and standards for the maintenance of service delivery and quality outputs in the department;
    • Further the mission and vision of the School of Therapeutic Sciences and the Department of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine

    The successful candidate will be appointed as Head for a fixed term of 5 years. Renewable for a second term

    The awarding of the title Professor/Associate Professor/Adjunct Professor will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications, research and other academic criteria as determined by the faculty guidelines.

    • Grade 12 plus a post matric Secretarial / Business Management and Administration Diploma, or reasonable alternatives, which will be evaluated on an ad hoc basis
    • Proficiency in MS Office (MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
    • Proficiency in using search engines, e.g. Google
    • Working knowledge of office equipment, including printers
    • Fast typing speed, ±50 – 60 words per minute.
    • At least five (5) years’ experience in administrative/secretarial work.
    • Must have a South African driver's license.

    The following will be advantageous

    Responsibilities:

    Administration related to clinical training include:

    • Maintain all records pertaining to clinical training of students, including time sheets, Fieldwork Evaluation Reports (FER), clinical examination rubrics and clinical education marks.
    • Be responsible for all correspondence, office documentation and filing thereof pertaining to clinical education.
    • Assist in the preparation of rural fieldwork blocks, by making bookings for accommodation, transport etc. for rural fieldwork supervisors.
    • Assist in the preparations for the bi-annual rural clinicians meetings- booking accommodation, transport, etc.
    • Assist in finding and booking accommodation for final year students for rural fieldwork.
    • Develop and maintain an inventory of departmental supplies (appliances, crockery boxes, etc.) for rural fieldwork placements.
    • Issue and receive departmental supplies (appliances, crockery boxes, etc.) to final year students for rural fieldwork.
    • Provide secretarial support to fieldwork coordinators regarding the planning and preparation of the undergraduate clinical examinations of final year students.
    • Provide secretarial support to the second- and third-year coordinators regarding arrangements for the clinical training placement of students, allocating and distributing FER to supervising staff, collating marks and saving FER forms to students’ files.
    • Develop and maintain a filing system pertaining to undergraduate student records, paying specific attention to updated and accurate records regarding clinical placements and supervisors for each student.
    • Develop and maintain a tracking system for ongoing monitoring of clinical hours of UG students, to ensure compliance with the HPCSA’s requirement of 1000 clinical training hours

    Financial Support Function related to clinical training (Budgets, student uniforms, documentation) include:

    • Assist with ordering scrubs for UG students.
    • Assist with paperwork related to UG students’ travelling stipends (excursion fees) for clinical fieldwork.
    • Obtain the budget from the finance secretary for catering of clinical exams and OSPEs.
    • Assist with catering for final year clinical exams and OSPEs and making arrangements for the clinical examiners.

    General secretarial duties include:

    • Keep a neat secretarial office.
    • Support the departmental finance secretary with reception duties in a professional manner.
    • Assist with managing the overnight library.
    • Assist with managing the key cupboard.
    • Assist with administrative and secretarial duties related to prize giving ceremonies.
    • Assist with filing regarding UG students, including medical certificates.
    • Assist with archiving graduated students’ documents.
    • Provide secretarial support to the Departmental Undergraduate Committee.

    Activity Management duties

    • Set up AMS system by end of January annually and grant access to all staff.
    • Upload marks in June for the final year 6-month programme.
    • Upload marks at the end of the year for all programmes.

    Lecturer (Full-time; fixed term (4 years) Contract)

    About the Job

    Qualifications and experience:

    • PhD, teaching and supervision experience, record of scholarly research and publications.
    • We seek candidates who are well grounded in the theoretical and methodological foundations of the field of IR. Preference will be given to those specialising in International Organizations and conflict resolution in an African context.
    • Candidates should be committed to excellence in teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision, and to contributing to debates about international issues facing South Africa and the continent. A typical teaching load is three courses per year but usually not more than two courses per semester. We also expect staff to produce at least one published piece of scholarly research per year. All staff members are expected to actively participate in administrative activities at discipline, School and Faculty levels.

    Finance Officer (3 Year Contract)

    About the Job

    Purpose:

    • ACMS invites suitable qualified and experienced applicants to apply for the Finance Officer vacancy. ACMS is a project/donor funded department. The purpose of this vacancy is to assist the department with financial maintenance, control and reporting of all donor funded budgets.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Budgeting and costing
    • Processing all student payments
    • Processing all claims
    • Processing all payroll claims
    • Managing all financial processes associated with grants, including financial reports to HOD and donors in compliance with university policies and procedures, donor requirements and legislation.
    • Administrative tasks as per department director, project managers and ACMS administrator

    Requirements:
    The successful incumbent must have:

    • 3-5 years financial experience in a tertiary environment
    • Financial Accounting Degree / Advanced Diploma or equivalent
    • Excellent communication skills
    • High standard of written English
    • Computer literacy: MS Office and Oracle financial package
    • Knowledge of Wits systems will be an advantage.
