    Commercialisation Manager

    The CSIR has three temporary vacancies for Commercialisation Managers in the Mining, Manufacturing, Defence and Security Division . The incumbent(s) will be accountable for implementing the commercialisation strategy and drive various initiatives for the Division. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Originate, structure, negotiate and close commercialisation transactions involving advanced technologies;
    • Evaluate the strength and advancement of the research relating to inventions and assess commercial potential;
    • Develop, recommend and implement commercialisation strategies for inventions and technologies at varying stages of maturity; evaluate capital needs, market potential and return on investment ; interact effectively with the research community, attorneys, external business professionals, financiers and corporate partners;
    • Package technology / intellectual property (IP) for commercialisation and develop commercialisation / business cases in collaboration with technical and support teams
    • Acquire and implement appropriate modes of commercialisation for IP / technology opportunities including licensing, partnerships and new venture creation, taking into account relevant aspects that include regulatory and compliance requirements (e.g. Reserve Bank approvals, PFMA, IPR Act);
    • Remodel, advice on, and review proposals, technology development and commercialisation arrangements and contracts;
    • Amplify, lead, and manage intellectual property development and protection strategies; managing the intellectual property portfolio and associated reporting;
    • Account for a robust, balanced portfolio and pipeline of commercialisation and intellectual property projects and leads;
    • Effectively use market / business intelligence to inform the division and clusters’ Research Development and Innovation (RDI) agenda, facilitate development of technologies for current and future competitiveness and ensure collaboration with industry and relevant parties locally and internationally;
    • Lead and maintain in-depth stakeholder engagement in industry and the public sector at large;
    • Demonstrate knowledge of all relevant legislation policies and processes.
       

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, business, finance with at least five years’ commercialisation experience in industry or leading research and technology Organisation (RTO);
    • A post graduate qualification in Intellectual Property/Tech Transfer/Technology Management or relevant qualification is a requirement;
    • Legal , business , finance qualification would be an added advantage;
    • Relevant industry experience, knowledge and networks for technology commercialisation and resource mobilisation;
    • Relevant industry experience, knowledge and expertise in the development of commercialisation strategies, business cases, valuation, deal structuring and negotiation
    • Excellent communicator with strong business acumen;
    • High-level stakeholder management and industry-related networks;
    • Excellent communicator with strong, demonstrable business acumen; and
    • Strong people management and organisational development skills.

    Cybersecurity Engineers

    Key Responsibilities

    • Design, develop, engineer, implement and/or manage cybersecurity tools and systems/infrastructure for Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) services;
    • Direct the CSIRT knowledge base for maintaining a current knowledge of the ICT security technologies, threats, vulnerabilities concepts and controls, including appropriate countermeasures, and advising on ICT security best practices and recommendations;
    • Produce design documentation, best practices recommendations, secure system configurations and other documents for CSIRT, NICIS and beneficiary systems and infrastructure; specifically provide technical expertise on securing the NICIS (SANReN, CHPC, DIRISA) infrastructure;
    • Assist analysts in monitoring security threats and risks and lead the detection and investigation of suspicious ICT security events as technical expert;
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory related to the security and privacy of digital information;
    • Perform threat intelligence and technology watch activities and generate announcements suitable for and relevant to NICIS beneficiaries;
    • Contribute and provide expert inputs towards the development of CSIRT processes/workflows, as well as contribute towards the development, adoption of, and ensure compliance with ICT security policies and processes;
    • Develop, procure and/or customise required ICT security tools and technologies;
    • Provide technical incident response support to NICIS staff and beneficiaries;
    • Present the development of new CSIRT systems, tools and/or processes at appropriate forums (e.g. International CSIRT meetings) and network with key stakeholders and partners.
       

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Bachelor’s degree in information technology, information systems, computer science, engineering or related field with at least six years’ general ICT experience (networks, system administration and/or development), including two years in information security (preferably engineering);
    • An intermediate/advanced-level information security certification in at least one of the following or similar qualifications;
      • CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CASP+);
      • (ISC)2 Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP);
      • Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP);
    • Open-source tools and operating systems;
    • Skills in at least two of the following areas;
      • Programming and/or scripting;
      • Penetration testing principles, tools and techniques;
      • Vulnerability handling/management/assessments;
      • Detection sensors and analysis of sensor data (e.g. honeypots, intrusion detection/prevention systems, netflow, traffic/protocol analysis);
      • Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools, log aggregation, event correlation.

    Commercialisation Officer

    The CSIR has two temporary vacancies for Commercialisation Officers in the Mining, Manufacturing, Defence and Security Division . The incumbent(s) will be responsible for supporting and implementing the commercialisation strategy and drive various initiatives for the Division. These positions are based in Pretoria.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support the structuring, negotiation and closing of commercialisation transactions involving advanced technologies;
    • Undertake due diligence exercises, including market assessments, IP assessments, financial modelling, and business case development;
    • Evaluate the strength and advancement of the research relating to inventions and assess commercial potential;
    • Conduct research related to products/ technologies, market sectors, companies and competing technologies and present findings and recommendations for implementation
    • Undertake valuations/ financial analysis of commercial opportunities using appropriate tools and techniques;
    • Develop, recommend and implement commercialisation strategies for inventions and technologies at varying stages of maturity; evaluate capital needs, market potential and return on investment ; interact effectively with the research community, attorneys, external business professionals, financiers and corporate partners;
    • Assist with packaging technology / intellectual property (IP) for commercialisation and develop commercialisation / business cases in collaboration with technical and support teams;
    • Participate in determining appropriate commercialisation pathways, including venture creation;
    • Identify appropriate funding for taking inventions to market;
    • Draft terms of reference for EoIs/RFPs for commercialisation partners/licensees, service providers, coordinating selection and recruitment of suppliers, etc.
    • Ongoing administration, monitoring and evaluation of the divisionalportfolio of commercialisation projects, facilitating the execution of commercialisation plans
    • Participate in reviewing of proposals, agreements and legal documentation and making recommendations;
    • Manage project information and communication with various stakeholders and assist with reporting and compliance, e.g. quarterly, NIPMO.
       

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Bachelor’s degree in sciences, engineering, or business related with at least three years’ experience in industry /commercialisation , Technology/lP and project management/ private equity or related;
    • A Post Graduate qualification in intellectual property, technology transfer, technology management, or relevant qualification;
    • Relevant industry experience in Research Development and Innovation and also commercialisation;
    • Knowledge and networks for technology commercialisation and resource mobilisation;
    • Relevant industry experience, knowledge and expertise in the development of commercialisation strategies, business cases, valuation, deal structuring and negotiation;
    • Stakeholder management and industry-related networks;
    • Excellent communicator with strong, demonstrable business acumen; and
    • Strong people management and organisational development skills.
