    Junior Newsletters Editor

    Minimum Requirements

    • Tertiary qualification in international relations, political science, philosophy, journalism or related fields;
    • Professional experience with publishing tools such as WordPress, Mailchimp or related software;
    • A background in audience-focused writing, editing and storytelling; and
    • Creative skills in Photoshop or similar tools is an advantage.
    • An interest in global and local politics. Knowledge of South Africa’s political landscape;
    • A can-do attitude and curiosity about the world;
    • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment; and
    • Willingness to experiment and learn from the most experienced newsroom in the country.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Develop, write and edit newsletters, while exercising strong news judgement;
    • Assist in producing new newsletters and helping their design;
    • Work independently and communicate easily across multiple sections in Daily Maverick;
    • Work on email service providers (ESPs) and content management systems; and
    • Write and inform South African news readers in an engaging way.

    Business Maverick: Mid-level Journalist

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, economics, or a related field.
    • More than five years of experience in business journalism or a related reporting role would be advantageous.
    • Strong storytelling, research, and writing skills.
    • Ability to generate and execute original story ideas independently.
    • Familiarity with data journalism and investigative reporting techniques.
    • Proficiency in digital publishing tools and content management systems.
    • Experience with hosting or participating in webinars and panel discussions is a plus.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Article generation and reporting

    • Produce a minimum of three articles per week, covering the business and economic sectors, features, and including trend analyses.
    • Develop and pitch article ideas that align with the publication's strategic goals and audience interests.
    • Ensure one exclusive article is filed for the newspaper before Wednesday afternoon each week.

    Investigative journalism

    • Research and deliver one long-form investigative story per month, diving deep into significant business topics.
    • Utilise data analysis, interviews, and other investigative techniques to uncover insights.

    Source development

    • Build and maintain a network of contacts within the business, financial, and economic sectors.
    • Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including executives, analysts, and policymakers.

    Webinars and audience engagement

    • Participate in and contribute to webinars, panel discussions, and online forums to engage with audiences and establish thought leadership.
    • Collaborate with the editorial team to identify opportunities for interactive content and audience participation.

    Editorial standards and collaboration

    • Adhere to high standards of accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting.
    • Work closely with editors, designers, and other journalists to produce visually engaging and impactful stories.

    Junior Editorial Assistant, Maverick Life

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Media Studies, English, or a related field.
    • Exceptional command of English grammar, syntax, and punctuation.
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite1 and familiarity with CMS platforms like WordPress.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • A passion for journalism and storytelling.
    • Experience with image editing software is a plus.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Researching, fact-checking, proofreading and editing:

    • Prepare copy for editorial review: Thoroughly proofread and edit articles, features, and other content for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and stylistic inconsistencies.
    • Verify facts and sources.
    • Conduct research.
    • Schedule stories for publication. 
    • Prepare Maverick Life weekly newsletters: Write the introduction, send for checks and subbing, upload and schedule.

    Administrative support:

    • Manage and organise editorial schedules, commissioning and deadlines.
    • Assist with content management system (CMS) uploads.
    • Coordinate communication between writers, editors, and other contributors.
    • Assist with image sourcing.
    • Assist with various editorial tasks as needed.

    Communication:

    • Communicate effectively with team members, writers, and external contributors.
    • Respond to inquiries and requests in a timely and professional manner.
