    Senior Bulk Materials Handling Engineer

    As the successful candidate, you will:  

    • Participate in BMH design teams for local and overseas based projects throughout all project phases of development – from concept to detail
    • Plan, manage and coordinate the bulk material handling engineering activities on large and/or technically complex portion of a project and/or serve in an individual contributor role as the material handling expert completing broadly defined and/or technically complex engineering assignments
    • Develop a thorough understanding of the project requirements as they relate to scope, execution strategy, cost and schedule
    • Defines and develop the BMH work plan for insertion into the project specific execution plan and develop and maintain the project’s scope of work documentation and revise as required during the design evolution
    • Ensure that quality of engineering work is carried out in accordance with project and organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles
    • Ensure that all BMH work designed, manufactured and supplied complies with the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
    • Prepare or assist in the preparation of project specific procedures
    • Perform or provide supervision to relevant engineering and design activities on small and large projects that includes calculations, plant layout development, deliverable development and other engineering documentation using standards and/or new methods as required
    • Prepare or assist in the preparation of design calculations for conveyors, feeders, bins, hoppers and other bulk materials handling equipment
    • Prepare scope of work, technical specifications, data sheets and other documentation required for the supply, fabrication, installation and commissioning of new BMH equipment or systems
    • Perform tender evaluations and recommendations to appoint suitable equipment suppliers, fabricators, erection contractors and technical consultants required to support projects
    • Support the equipment evaluation and procurement activities during project execution
    • Coordinate and interface with equipment suppliers
    • Review and approve vendor/fabricator shop drawings
    • Schedule, coordinate and participate in mechanical and multidiscipline design and layout reviews
    • Coordination, between the BMH team and other disciplines, of all activities being performed as the design evolves to ensure quality, cost and schedule requirements are met
    • Monitor and guide design/drafting tasks and oversee the internal checking required on all project drawings/ Mentoring of designers and junior engineers.
    • Participate in site based project activities from initial site visits to installation and commissioning
    • Engineering support to installation, construction and commissioning teams with the occasional deployment as a commissioning resource when required.
    • Participate in resolution of all technical issues related to the BMH discipline during project lifecycle, including planning phase, design, procurement, fabrication, construction and commissioning
    • Active involvement in Hatch’s BMH global community of practice and technical forums
    • Maintain high level of knowledge of professional and technical BMH developments

    You bring to the role:  

    • B.Sc.Eng./B.Eng./PR.Tech. in mechanical engineering or equivalent
    • +15 years of increasing responsibility and experience in the design and construction of bulk material handling and industrial facilities including detailed design and drafting of material handling equipment.
    • Experience as a Lead Bulk Material Handling Engineer in Mineral Mining projects
    • Experience in all stages of engineering – from concept studies to detailed design, installation and commissioning
    • Experience in plant layouts
    • Experience selecting mechanical equipment components for bulk material handling systems including drives, bearings, pulleys, shafts, scales, and dust collection and suppression systems.
    • Experience using design software such as 'Sidewinder' for conveyor design, and 'Newton' or 'Rocky' for discrete element modeling (DEM) of material flow.
    • Experience in preparation of bulk material handling and heavy plant equipment arrangement drawings using Computer Aided Drafting and Design software is required.
    • Computer skills that include proficiency with Word, Excel, MathCad, and various analysis programs.
    • Good knowledge of local and international codes and standards applicable to bulk material handling design work
    • Knowledge of different material types and their behavior in different conditions is essential for plant and equipment design
    • Willingness to travel for short term assignments/site visits – locally and internationally.

    Desirable

    • Experience with the design and/or operation of a port import/export facility
    • Exposure to OEM equipment which includes rail car tipplers, crushers, screens, vibrating feeders, stackers, reclaimers and shiploaders
    • Surface and underground mining equipment product knowledge would be an advantage
    • Working knowledge of the OHS Act, MHS Act and other relevant safety legislation.

    Site Planner - 12-Month Fixed Term Contract

    • The Senior Planner is responsible for the delivery of project planning and progress measurement, ensuring that Hatch procedures and best practices are applied, as appropriate, and recommending changes to the Project Controls Manager where required. The Project Planner is responsible for developing and maintaining the project master schedule to meet the project objectives.

    Manager: Finance

    • The Manager Finance performs a wide range of accounting and financial management duties in accordance with established accounting standards, internal controls, and regulatory requirements. The role provides technical accounting support to the Regional Finance Director and the Accounting and Finance Teams across multiple jurisdictions. The Manager Finance  is responsible for overseeing financial operations, ensuring strong governance, maintaining accurate financial reporting, and supporting compliance with corporate, tax, payroll recording,and statutory requirements.

    • The Senior Electrical Engineer provides support to the Engineering Manager and is responsible for supervising a team of electrical engineers and designers.     Senior Control & Automation Engineer

    • The Senior Control & Automation Engineer Engineer provides support to the project Engineering Manager and is responsible for supervising a team of systems and process control engineers and designers. The Senior Control & Automation Engineer provides leadership and assists in the resolution of all technical and team issues related to the discipline. In addition, the Senior Control & Automation Engineer  defines and develops the plan to meet the project requirements and manages the team of systems and process control engineers and designers to achieve the expected results in terms of safety, quality, cost and schedule.

    • Assist in the preparation and development of project specific procedures

    Senior Fire Engineer

    • Hatch is looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual to join their Fire Safety Group in Johannesburg. The role of Senior Fire Safety Engineer seems to be quite dynamic, requiring close collaboration with project management, clients, engineers, and the global team. The emphasis on developing expertise and creating customized fire safety solutions suggests that this position would be both challenging and rewarding.

    Responsibilities:

    • Conduct fire risk analysis, code compliance assessments, and conceptual fire safety designs in code consulting on projects with respect to the Building & Fire Codes and related SANS, NFPA, and FM Global standards.
    • Perform fire hazard assessment design calculations and ensure plans are compliant with relevant codes and standards.
    • Facilitate fire risk assessment sessions and perform fire risk assessments.
    • Develop performance-based strategies and/or code alternates utilizing fire engineering principles.
    • Contribute to or prepare technical reports in various phases of engineering.
    • Support site field visits to obtain information and data to support projects.
    • Participate in and contribute to design reviews.

    • Prepare, review, and evaluate vendor technical bid evaluations and technical queries for different mechanical equipment (e.g., fire water pumps, foam systems, sprinklers, spray systems, firefighting equipment).
    • Provide services across several sectors including mining, power, nuclear, thermal, infrastructure, and oil and gas.
    • Perform hydraulic calculation reports.
    • Prepare piping and instrument diagrams (P&ID).
    • Perform fire and gas location layouts and philosophies.
    • Conduct consequence modeling and gas dispersion studies.

    Software skills required:

    • PIPINET
    • AFT fathom
    • CFD modeling

    Qualifications:

    • A Bachelor/Master’s degree in either Fire Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is required
    • A Master’s degree in Mechanical is considered a strong asset
    • Professional registration with ECSA would be highly advantageous
    • Aptitude towards alternative compliance approaches, and thinking “outside the box”

    Senior Piping Designer - 12-Month Fixed Term Contract

    • The Senior Piping Designer is responsible for creating the Piping 3D models and producing 2D drawings, and fabrication exchange deliverables, and consistent design data for reporting in accordance with Project requirements and Company standards. Our Senior Piping Designers work with design and engineering teams locally and around the globe to deliver complex small and large-scale engineering projects. 

    Key responsbilities:

    • Adhere to and promote the Hatch corporate safety and quality culture
    • Develop a thorough understanding of the project requirements as they relate to scope, execution strategy, cost and schedule with the Lead Piping Designer
    • Layout complex plant and piping systems using 3D modeling optimization and design tools
    • Review and understand the project packages scope and schedule you are responsible for
    • Prepare a preliminary piping layout and provide input to mechanical equipment and steel locations
    • Produce and/or check design deliverables including digital delivery files such as isometrics, PCF’s (Piping Component File), and 2D drawings
    • Perform clash detection of models and other disciplines models and coordinate actions and closeout
    • Place and or check pipe support design and placement including special pipe supports with piping stress analyst input
    • Develop and/or check piping standard details
    • Validate dimensions of piping components including inline items against vendor drawings and catalogs
    • Manage change during continuous design development including P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams), layout and procurement
    • Ensure design integrity is maintained between the piping design and P&ID (Piping & Instrumentation Diagram) development
    • Develop, coordinate and/or check piping Material Take Offs (MTOs)
    • In conjunction with engineering staff, prepare design concepts for internal and client reviews
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and project procedures for all design activities
    • Support the application of piping systems to achieve the best project outcomes
    • Check piping design data in the design environment to ensure successful implementation of data-centric processes
    • Perform design for piping/mechanical plant models using project specifications/procedures and applying industry best practices
    • Use vendor drawings and information sheets to develop and check the model.
    • Assist in the preparation and development of project specific procedures, templates and checklists.
    • Identify and communicate improvement opportunities related to corporate systems, procedures, templates and checklists. 
    • Review and approve piping technical deliverables
    • Facilitate piping design reviews both formal and informal
    • Ensure coordination with designers and engineers of other disciplines
    • Assist in the resolution of piping design issues during project lifecycle, including planning phase, design, procurement, fabrication, construction and commissioning
    • Provide input to proposals and man-hour estimates
    • Assist in preparation of list of design deliverables and time-based functions to facilitate the planning and control of the piping budget
    • Participate in the selection of piping design candidates
    • Train and mentor junior and intermediate designers and provide guidance on Hatch standards and quality requirements
    • Promote and maintain the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of piping work.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Mechanical Engineering Degree
    • Minimum eight years' 'relevant project design experience
    • Extensive experience in design and modeling skills for plant layout, piping design and detailing. Strong client focus.
    • Good leadership skills
    • Experience in mentoring and supervising designers
