Participate in BMH design teams for local and overseas based projects throughout all project phases of development – from concept to detail
Plan, manage and coordinate the bulk material handling engineering activities on large and/or technically complex portion of a project and/or serve in an individual contributor role as the material handling expert completing broadly defined and/or technically complex engineering assignments
Develop a thorough understanding of the project requirements as they relate to scope, execution strategy, cost and schedule
Defines and develop the BMH work plan for insertion into the project specific execution plan and develop and maintain the project’s scope of work documentation and revise as required during the design evolution
Ensure that quality of engineering work is carried out in accordance with project and organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles
Ensure that all BMH work designed, manufactured and supplied complies with the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
Prepare or assist in the preparation of project specific procedures
Perform or provide supervision to relevant engineering and design activities on small and large projects that includes calculations, plant layout development, deliverable development and other engineering documentation using standards and/or new methods as required
Prepare or assist in the preparation of design calculations for conveyors, feeders, bins, hoppers and other bulk materials handling equipment
Prepare scope of work, technical specifications, data sheets and other documentation required for the supply, fabrication, installation and commissioning of new BMH equipment or systems
Perform tender evaluations and recommendations to appoint suitable equipment suppliers, fabricators, erection contractors and technical consultants required to support projects
Support the equipment evaluation and procurement activities during project execution
Coordinate and interface with equipment suppliers
Review and approve vendor/fabricator shop drawings
Schedule, coordinate and participate in mechanical and multidiscipline design and layout reviews
Coordination, between the BMH team and other disciplines, of all activities being performed as the design evolves to ensure quality, cost and schedule requirements are met
Monitor and guide design/drafting tasks and oversee the internal checking required on all project drawings/ Mentoring of designers and junior engineers.
Participate in site based project activities from initial site visits to installation and commissioning
Engineering support to installation, construction and commissioning teams with the occasional deployment as a commissioning resource when required.
Participate in resolution of all technical issues related to the BMH discipline during project lifecycle, including planning phase, design, procurement, fabrication, construction and commissioning
Active involvement in Hatch’s BMH global community of practice and technical forums
Maintain high level of knowledge of professional and technical BMH developments
You bring to the role:
B.Sc.Eng./B.Eng./PR.Tech. in mechanical engineering or equivalent
+15 years of increasing responsibility and experience in the design and construction of bulk material handling and industrial facilities including detailed design and drafting of material handling equipment.
Experience as a Lead Bulk Material Handling Engineer in Mineral Mining projects
Experience in all stages of engineering – from concept studies to detailed design, installation and commissioning
Experience in plant layouts
Experience selecting mechanical equipment components for bulk material handling systems including drives, bearings, pulleys, shafts, scales, and dust collection and suppression systems.
Experience using design software such as 'Sidewinder' for conveyor design, and 'Newton' or 'Rocky' for discrete element modeling (DEM) of material flow.
Experience in preparation of bulk material handling and heavy plant equipment arrangement drawings using Computer Aided Drafting and Design software is required.
Computer skills that include proficiency with Word, Excel, MathCad, and various analysis programs.
Good knowledge of local and international codes and standards applicable to bulk material handling design work
Knowledge of different material types and their behavior in different conditions is essential for plant and equipment design
Willingness to travel for short term assignments/site visits – locally and internationally.
Desirable
Experience with the design and/or operation of a port import/export facility
Exposure to OEM equipment which includes rail car tipplers, crushers, screens, vibrating feeders, stackers, reclaimers and shiploaders
Surface and underground mining equipment product knowledge would be an advantage
Working knowledge of the OHS Act, MHS Act and other relevant safety legislation.
