    Medical Specialist Grade 1 - 3 (Radiology) (Steve Biko Academic Hospital)

    Requirements :

    • Senior/National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery plus MMed (Rad D) or FC Rad (SA) Diag. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist Paediatrics.
    • Proof of current registration with the HPCSA from 01 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. Medical Specialist Grade 1 no experience after registration with HPCSA,
    • Medical Specialist Grade 2 - A minimum of 05 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA and
    • Medical Specialist Grade 3 - A minimum of 10 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA in a normal Speciality. Experience in General Radiology, Sonar, Mammography, CT/PET/CT, MRI and general intervention.

    Requirements:

    • Senior certificate, MBCHB or Equivalent Degree that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.     Main Purpose of the Job

    • To provide service delivery, undergraduate and post graduate training and to undertake research to assist clinicians in patient management, to build capacity within the field and to build knowledge with the field.

    Key Job Responsibility

    • Responsible for management of a unit / laboratory / facility in collaboration with a laboratory manager.
    • Active involvement within the NHLS/ University /Professional bodies promoting discipline and/or organisational strategic objectives at a regional or national level. 
    • Participation in the development of teaching program/modules and/or participation in regional / national discipline specific teaching programs.
    • Manages several pathologists and/or a large laboratory.
    • Implements improvements to local / regional laboratory practices or clinical programmes
    • Contribute to the development of pathology diagnostic policies and/or responsible for supporting several
    • laboratories and/or providing a referral consultative and/or clinical diagnostic service at a regional level
    • Lead the QA team of the Unit/Laboratory to comply with SANAS requirements and ensure continuous quality improvement.
    • Introducing or improving diagnostic and interpretation techniques and procedures
    • Validation of new instruments / tests for national programmes (e.g. via HTA) 
    • Collaboration of research with other departments at a national level.

    Minimum requirements & key competency

    • FCPath or MMED qualification in the relevant discipline

    Medical Officer Grade 3: General Surgery (Mapulaneng Hospital)

    Requirements

    • MBChB degree (qualification) that allows registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner n Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner (2026) (Independent Practice).
    • A valid work permit will be required from non-South Africans. Sound knowledge of medical ethics. Multidisciplinary management and teamwork and experience in the respective medical discipline. Knowledge of current Health and Public Service regulations and policies.
    • Additional experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Neurosurgery, Anaesthesiology, Urology and ENT will serve as recommendation. Skills in terms of consultations, history taking, examination, clinical assessment and clinical management.
    • Grade 3: A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice).
    • A minimum of eleven (11) years relevant experience after registration with a recognised foreign health profession council and / or the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice) for foreign qualified employees.
    • Knowledge, Skills, Training and Competences Required: Sound knowledge of medical ethics. Multidisciplinary management and teamwork and experience in the respective medical discipline. Sound clinical knowledge, competency and skills in general clinical domains.
    • The ability to work under supervision as an efficient team member. Good communication, leadership, interpersonal, and supervisory skills. Ability to manage patients independently, diligently, responsibility and engage when necessary. Knowledge of current health policies, legislation, programmes and priorities within the domain.
    • Ability to teach, guide and junior staff within the department. Behavioural Attributes: Stress tolerance, to work within a team, self-confidence and the ability to build and maintain good relationship.

    • Duties in theatre may also be needed, performing surgical procedures. Consultant ward rounds with senior decision making in respect of patient care, including disposition decisions and oversight and input into OPD services.
    • Clinical Governance in respect of accurate medical record keeping, data / trend analysis, contribution to Morbidity & Mortality meetings and management of complaints and use of existing digital platforms for referrals and patient related documentation.
    • Teaching, training, research activities, including supervision & teaching of junior doctors and participation in the academic program in the hospital. 
    • Contribution to improvement of internal systems within the General Surgery service – both within the hospital and the Metro East ecosystem and participation in the wider management of the medical services within the hospital, both clinical and administrative, where reasonable and feasible.
