What You'll Be Doing

• Support & Maintain: Monitor and support existing data pipelines to ensure smooth daily operations.
• Optimisation: Identify opportunities to improve performance and scalability of current processes and data flows.
• Governance: Ensure data is structured in line with compliance and metadata governance standards.
• Development Best Practices: Follow established development life cycle processes, from design and testing to deployment and documentation.
• Code Management: Maintain, version, and update code repositories in line with collaborative team standards.

Who We're Looking For

• You are an experienced data professional with a strong background in SQL and a deep understanding of data pipeline architectures. You work well independently and within a collaborative team environment. Youre proactive about identifying inefficiencies and enthusiastic about data reliability, quality, and performance.

Minimum Requirements
Experience:

• At least 3 years experience in a Data Engineering, BI, or Data Development role.

Technical Skills:

• SQL (Advanced proficiency required)
• Ab Initio experience a plus (not mandatory)
• Solid understanding of data modelling and relational databases
• Competence in quality assurance processes and standards
• Exposure to metadata governance and data compliance frameworks

Soft Skills:

• Strong analytical mindset

• Effective communicator can translate technical findings into business insights

About the Role

• We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Business Data Manager to lead the governance, quality, and strategic utilization of client data across the enterprise. This is a hybrid role based in Sandton, offering the opportunity to drive data stewardship in a complex and dynamic environment. Youll work closely with various business and technical teams to ensure data assets are governed effectively and meet the highest standards of quality, integrity, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities
Data Governance & Stewardship

• Define and implement data governance strategies for client data domains.
• Maintain enterprise data policies, standards, and procedures.
• Ensure adherence to data governance frameworks and compliance requirements.

Data Quality Management

• Establish data quality metrics and KPIs.
• Lead root cause analysis and resolution of data issues.
• Champion continuous improvement in data accuracy, consistency, and reliability.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

• Act as a bridge between business, IT, data engineering, and analytics teams.
• Support data owners and custodians in fulfilling their data-related responsibilities.
• Communicate complex data issues and insights to senior stakeholders.

Metadata & Lineage Management

• Drive the use and maintenance of metadata repositories.
• Promote transparency of data lineage, definitions, and data usage across the organization.

Risk & Compliance Alignment

• Collaborate with Information Security, Risk, and Compliance to align data practices with regulatory and ethical standards.
• Contribute to audit readiness and support data protection initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Business, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in data governance, data quality, or enterprise data management roles.
• Strong understanding of data governance frameworks (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK).
• Experience with data management tools (e.g., Collibra, Informatica, Alation, or similar).
• Familiarity with regulatory standards such as POPIA, GDPR, and BCBS 239.
