    Senior Lecturer: Emergency Medicine

    Faculty of Health Sciences

    • The Division of Emergency Medicine seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer to convene the Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Care in a permanent part-time position (3 days per week).
    • The successful candidate will provide academic leadership of the PGDip programme, including programme management, curriculum oversight, teaching, postgraduate supervision, and strategic development. The candidate will also contribute to teaching across the Division’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and support the Division’s research and academic mission.

    Head Of Division: Medical Microbiology

    • The Department of Pathology, within which the Division of Medical Microbiology exists, contains seven other Divisions: Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Forensic Pathology, Immunology, Haematology, Medical Virology and Human Genetics. These Divisions are established in partnership with the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), and/or the Provincial Department of Health. 
    • The Division of Medical Microbiology at UCT plays a pivotal role in Medical Microbiology research, medical education, and service provision. The Head of Division (HODiv) will lead, champion, and manage all focus areas within the Division, including medical microbiology research, teaching, training, and social responsiveness, both within South Africa and on an international scale.
    • The HODiv will develop strategic and operational plans in consultation with the Head of Department (HOD) of Pathology, the Dean FHS, Groote Schuur Hospital CEO, and NHLS CEO, driving innovation and ensuring best practices in all activities.
    • This role demands academic leadership to advance the Division’s scholarship, teaching, and standards, while fostering staff and student development and creating an integrated, innovative academic unit.

    Head Of Division: Radiology

    • The University of Cape Town and the Department of Health and Wellness of the Western Cape Government invite applications for this permanent post of Head of Division of Radiology in the Department of Radiation Medicine within UCT’s world-leading Faculty, for appointment as soon as possible.
    • The Faculty of Health Sciences’ vision is to be a centre of excellence in health sciences that is locally relevant and globally competitive. Established in 1912, the Faculty is a leading faculty of Health Sciences on the African continent.
    • The mission of the Faculty of Health and Sciences is carried out in close collaboration with the Department of Health and Wellness of the Western Cape Provincial Government. Governed by a dynamic bilateral agreement, the faculty and the province seek to enhance the wellness of the people of the Western Cape through the ethos of learning while serving and serving while learning.
    • To this end, the Head of Division of Radiology, will be appointed as joint staff at University of Cape Town, and will be responsible for staff and services at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) and Red Cross war memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) but will be required to develop and provide oversight of the broader provincial radiation medicine platform.
    • Radiology represents a critical discipline which interacts across multiple clinical domains. Globally the influence of cutting-edge technology cannot be ignored. The rapid innovation within the technology of the discipline of the immobility offered to diagnostics, radiology demands leaders who are both agile and adaptive, capable of complex management approaches coupled with the ability to lead teams of people with varying capacity.
    • The Head of Division of Radiology will lead and manage the transition from a tertiary Radiology system, to a platform-based eco-system (GSH, RXH, Victoria hospital, Somerset hospital and Mitchell's Plain and beyond), mindful of the realities of the Western Cape and with the purpose of taking the Radiology department into the future. They should have a demonstrated record of innovation, and management of complex imaging systems as well as commitment to education and research.
    • This person should show a nuanced understanding of the national South African context and its potential contribution to continental and global development. Such leadership will include responsibilities for service provision, teaching, training, research and social accountability. The head of Radiology should be someone who has trained and mentored others, not necessarily through formal academic teaching, but through hands-on knowledge transfer and building capability in the people and systems around them.
    • The Head of Division must work with both university and provincial structures to create a dynamic forward-thinking strategic vision and mission and effective operational plan for the division and the department of Radiation Medicine, which resonates with the needs of communities as well as both the university and government priorities.

    Lecturer (nGAP) French Language & Literature

    • The appointment of the successful candidate at Lecturer level will be in line with the implementation of the nGAP programme that focuses on recruiting new academics on a 4-year or 6-year funded track.
    • For the 4-year funded track, eligible candidates would constitute those that have already attained their doctoral degrees. Successful candidates will have a reduced 50% workload in their first two years of employment to focus on writing and building their academic careers and be expected to take up full teaching workloads in the third and fourth years of their appointment.
    • For the 6-year funded track, eligible candidates would constitute those that have completed their Masters degrees, or that have already started their doctoral degrees. These candidates will be supported with a reduced workload (20%) for three years to grow their doctoral studies. In year 4 they would have a 50% workload, and in year 5 and year 6 of the funded program they will assume their full academic workload within SLL.
    • All candidates will initially assist in teaching on, developing, and expanding the offerings in French Language and Literature. In addition, depending on whether appointed on the 4-year or the 6-year funded track, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to supervision at the post-graduate level tied to areas within French Language and Literature, as well as the larger French and Francophone Studies field. The goal of the latter is to grow capacity in terms of a research profile with attendant and appropriate academic publishing opportunities.
    • To be considered for the lecturer position, candidates on both the 4-year and 6-year tracks will have to have attained a 70% grade in their Masters degree or equivalent. This is a non-negotiable nGAP requirement.
    • In terms of nGAP conditions, applicants must be 40 years or younger.

    REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WITH AN AWARDED MASTERS DEGREE (6-YEAR FUNDED TRACK)

    • A Masters Grade Point Average (GPA) of 70% or more.

    • We are inviting applications for a Core Technology Platform Administrator to provide support across the IDM Core Technology Platforms. The purpose of this position is to provide coordinated financial, user-fee, client service, information management, and administrative support by maintaining accurate and compliant workflows for procurement, payments, user fees, cost recovery, client requests, performance reporting, records, and platform events, enabling Platform Managers to focus on scientific and technical service delivery.

    Requirements:

    • An NQF level 7 qualification in business administration, laboratory administrator, public administration, project administration or a related field.
    • At least five years of relevant administrative experience in a research, higher-education or similarly complex service environment.
    • Demonstrated strategic financial management understanding, including connecting the day-to-day management of cash flow with long-term goals like maximizing profit.
    • Experience in procurement or purchase-order administration, invoice or payment processing, internal cost transfers or journal requests, user-fee or debt follow-up, and budget or transaction tracking.
    • Demonstrated experience maintaining databases or trackers, compiling management reports and coordinating multiple concurrent requests across different stakeholders.

    Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate procurement and purchasing activities, including purchase orders, supplier quotations and approvals, in compliance with UCT policies.

    • Administer client request and service management systems, ensuring complete submissions and coordinating the referral of technical, compliance and scheduling queries to the appropriate Platform Managers.
    • Maintain platform data and reporting, including master records, data validation, reconciliations, dashboards and reports, while ensuring data integrity, confidentiality and compliance with UCT information management and POPIA requirements.
    • Manage platform documentation and records, maintaining electronic repositories, version control, document lifecycle processes and access permissions in accordance with UCT records management requirements.
    • Provide administrative support for platform events, communications and stakeholder engagement, coordinating logistics, maintaining communication channels and stakeholder records, managing routine enquiries, and providing cross-platform administrative support.

    • The Centre for Lung Infection and Immunity (CLII) has a number of new and exciting studies starting and require applications for RESEARCH NURSES*. CLII is based within the Division of Pulmonology in the Department of Medicine at UCT and is committed to the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of TB in Southern Africa.
    • CLII conducts various HIV, TB, and COVID-19-related research projects at numerous sites in Cape Town. The successful applicants will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of research project(s), supervise participant recruitment, enrolment and follow up visits for specific projects and studies, track recruitment efforts.
    • Coordinating the assessment of participants including the collection of specimens and research data related to the growing number of studies within the Unit.

    Requirements:

    Research Scientist (AMR Biology)

    • The Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D) at the University of Cape Town is seeking a Research Scientist in AMR biology for a laboratory-based position, where the primary role will be determining the in vitro efficacy of novel compounds against Gram-negative bacteria in support for H3D AMR drug discovery programs.
    • The Research Scientist will report to a Senior Investigator in the AMR biology group.

    Requirements:

    • A minimum of a BSc Hons. degree with relevant laboratory experience in microbiology.
    • Minimum 1-year hands-on experience in working with and manipulating Gram-negative bacteria (A. baumannii, K. pneumoniae and others) for a year or more is essential as demonstrated through work experience.
    • Good knowledge of bacterial culturing and in vitro assessment of compound efficacy techniques.
    • Experience of working in a drug discovery group is an advantage.

    Responsibilities:

    • Independently run routine in vitro microbiology compound efficacy experiments within a team setting.
    • Be proficient in the determination of compound minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs), time-kill kinetic (TKK) and frequency of resistance (FoR).
    • As well as bacterial strain characterization via determination of growth kinetics and antibiotic resistance profiling.
    • Good knowledge of general Laboratory Health and Safety.
