    Full Stack Java Developer

    Role Purpose

    • To help grow our software platform, Unifi is looking for a talented Java Developer to join our small, highly motivated software development team.
    • From requirements gathering to final product delivery, you'll be involved in every step of the development process, giving you plenty of opportunity to show off your coding skills while also making a real difference to Unifi and our clients.

    Our Technology Stack 

    • We work with a modern and diverse technology stack to deliver high-quality solutions.
    • Our core technologies include Groovy and Java for programming, with Micronaut and Spring Boot as our primary application frameworks. 
    • We use Gorm and Hibernate for persistence and rely on MySQL as our main database. For web-based user interfaces, we utilise Vaadin. 
    • In addition, our technology stack features Activiti for workflow management, Micronaut and JAX-RS for microservices, and Electron for cross-platform development. 
    • We ensure secure operations with Apache Shiro and manage queue processing through Apache ActiveMQ Artemis. 
    • Other tools in our stack include MongoDB for document storage, Jasper Reports for reporting, and Apache Velocity as our template engine. We also use SWAGGER for API documentation. 
    • Our development environment follows Agile Kanban methodology with continuous delivery, using Jenkins for builds, IntelliJ as our IDE, Bitbucket GIT for source control, and Gradle for build configuration. 
    • We stay connected through Slack and Google and manage our development cycle with Jira.

    Product Owner - Client Growth

    About the Role

    • Unifi Africa is seeking a commercially savvy and data-driven Product Owner – Client Growth to lead the design and optimisation of software and systems that power client acquisition, onboarding, and retention across our operations in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya.
    • This pivotal role sits at the intersection of growth strategy, user experience, marketing technology, and product development.
    • You’ll be responsible for building and iterating the tools, journeys, and channels that help attract, onboard, and retain our customers—across online, mobile, and branch channels.
    • The ideal candidate has a passion for scaling digital products in emerging markets, a solid grasp of client behaviour, and a proven track record of driving measurable outcomes in acquisition, conversion, and retention.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Own the product lifecycle for client growth-focused systems, from awareness through acquisition to retention — including marketing tools, client onboarding, and client growth and loyalty mechanisms.
    • Design and optimise digital and in-branch client acquisition experiences, including SEO, tracking of marketing campaigns and linking with aggregators.
    • Lead the development of web and physical client acquisition and onboarding tools, making it seamless for clients to start and complete their loan journey online or in-branch.
    • Collaborate with the marketing and development teams to ensure a cohesive and compelling user experience.
    • Define and maintain a product roadmap, working closely with local operations and marketing teams to align business needs with scalable solutions.
    • Track, report, and communicate product performance and strategic growth metrics to senior stakeholders.

    Qualifications, Experience and Requirements

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
    • 8+ years of professional experience, including 5+ years in product management, digital marketing, or growth roles within financial services, fintech, or e-commerce.
    • Deep understanding of acquisition funnels, CRM, onboarding flows, and client retention strategies in digital or hybrid models.
    • Proven success in driving measurable outcomes across the growth funnel: acquisition, activation, reactivation, and repeat use.
    • Experience working in African or other emerging markets is strongly preferred.
    • Knowledge of Agile product development, with hands-on experience using tools like Jira, Figma, and Miro.
    • Certification in product management, growth marketing, or agile methodologies is a plus.
    • Passion for Africa and commitment to improving access to financial services.

    Product Owner - Credit

    About the role

    • Unifi Africa is seeking a strategically minded and experienced Product Owner – Credit to lead the end-to-end design, development, and implementation of credit and risk software solutions across our microlending operations in South Africa, Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya.
    • This is a high-impact role at the crossroads of product innovation, credit strategy, risk management, compliance, and technology. You will play a pivotal part in shaping how Unifi delivers responsible, scalable, and customer-centric financial products across diverse markets.
    • We’re looking for a candidate with deep expertise in financial services, a comprehensive understanding of the credit lifecycle, and a track record of building scalable, compliant digital lending solutions.
    • The ideal candidate is analytical, inquisitive, and execution-oriented—a systems thinker who excels at navigating complexity and driving results in a dynamic, high-growth environment.

    Responsibilities

    • Own the full product lifecycle for software and systems supporting credit and risk policy—from ideation through delivery, iteration, and scaling.
    • Define and maintain a clear product vision, roadmap, and backlog aligned with the organisation’s credit and risk strategy, in close collaboration with the Credit and Risk team.
    • Translate complex credit policies, underwriting models, and regulatory requirements into scalable product features and decision logic.
    • Continuously evaluate product performance using analytics, credit KPIs, and customer feedback to drive enhancements and maintain compliance.
    • Develop deep expertise in the lending platform’s core mechanics, including transaction processing, general ledger flows, repayment schedules, and configuration settings.
    • Ensure all products comply with local regulatory frameworks, including but not limited to NCR (South Africa), BoZ (Zambia), BoU (Uganda), and CBK (Kenya), while promoting innovation and commercial growth.
    • Champion a data-driven culture by embedding robust analytics, monitoring, and reporting capabilities into product architecture.
    • Communicate product performance, risk impacts, and strategic insights to Unifi’s leadership across regional markets.
    • Lead initiatives to build and enhance fraud detection and prevention systems, proactively addressing emerging risks in each operating environment.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Finance, Computer Science, or a related field.
    • Over 10 years of professional experience, with a minimum of 5 years in product management or product ownership roles within financial services or fintech.
    • Background in microlending, consumer credit, or digital financial inclusion.
    • Deep knowledge of credit policies, lending platform architecture, credit scoring methodologies, and risk modeling.
    • Demonstrated success in developing and managing digital lending products.
    • Experience with decision engines, credit bureau integrations, fraud detection systems, and KYC/AML compliance frameworks.
    • Product management certification (e.g., Pragmatic Institute, AIPMM, Product School, SAFe PM/PO) is a strong advantage.

    Product Owner - Integrations and Connectivity

    About the Role

    • Unifi is seeking a technically savvy and strategically minded Product Owner—Integrations and Connectivity to lead the design, development, and management of our integration services and connectivity platforms across South Africa, Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya.
    • This role is critical to ensuring seamless connectivity between Unifi’s core lending platforms and external systems, including telephony (PABX, VoIP), mobile network operators, payment gateways, banking partners, and credit bureaus.
    • The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with product ownership experience, a strong understanding of APIs, system integrations, and payment ecosystems, and a passion for building scalable, reliable connectivity solutions in emerging markets.

    Responsibilities

    • Own the end-to-end product lifecycle for Unifi’s integration services and connectivity platforms—from ideation to delivery and ongoing improvement.
    • Define and maintain the product vision, roadmap, and backlog for all integration-related services, ensuring alignment with Unifi’s broader business and technology strategies.
    • In collaboration with the Platform team, implement and monitor telephony systems, including PABX and VoIP solutions.
    • Lead integrations with mobile network operators to enable messaging, payments, USSD, and WhatsApp-based services across multiple African markets.
    • Oversee banking and payment gateway integrations to support disbursements, direct debits, EFTs, and related financial transactions.
    • Manage credit bureau and data provider integrations to enhance lending decisions and ensure regulatory compliance.
    • Partner with engineering and operations teams to ensure secure, scalable, and high-performance integrations.
    • Ensure integrations include real-time monitoring and metrics to track system health, diagnose issues, and drive continuous improvements.

    • Communicate integration strategy, progress, risks, and key updates to Unifi’s senior leadership team.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
    • 10+ years of professional experience, including 5+ years in technical product management or ownership, ideally in fintech, telecom, or software integration.
    • Strong technical expertise in APIs and RESTful services.

    Responsibilities

    • Proven expertise in system modeling, translating business requirements into technical specifications, and producing clear, comprehensive documentation.
    • Strong working knowledge of modern APIs, web services, system integrations, and enterprise-level applications.
    • Proficient in writing and executing SQL queries to analyze data, validate logic, and support system design or issue resolution.
    • Familiar with collaboration and productivity tools such as Jira, Confluence, Miro, Postman, or equivalent platforms.
    • Solid grasp of software development life cycles and Agile methodologies, with practical experience working in cross-functional teams.
    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Hands-on experience with lending platforms, financial products, or integrations with third-party services (e.g., payment gateways, mobile wallets, credit bureaus) is highly advantageous.
