    Sensory Technologist

    Job Description

    Key performance areas will include, but not be limited to:

    Responsible for the effective operation of the sensory laboratory through:

    • Recruitment, screening and management of trained and expert sensory panels.
    • Facilitation of sensory panel sessions according to project requirements.
    • Scheduling, coordination and execution of different types of sensory testing (difference tests, quantitative descriptive & rapid methods) within agreed time schedules. This would include critical results review, initiation of additional analysis (analytical or sensory) and reporting of the sensory results to the line manager.
    • Monitoring sensory panel performance, identify and address training needs in agreement with internal standards and sensory best practices.
    • Sensory test design and data collection in Compusense®.
    • Collection and delivery of reliable and reproducible sensory data and top-line data analysis.
    • Ensure the general housekeeping duties within the sensory lab is executed in line with sensory best practice; This includes the maintenance and supply of laboratory materials and equipment.
    • Liaise with internal and external suppliers of ingredients to obtain and optimise reference materials for sensory panel training.
    • Coordinate and conduct sensory training of internal employees.

    The successful candidate must preferably have the following qualifications, experience and skills:

    • MSc in Food Science (Sensory Science) OR MSc in Wine biotechnology with specific focus in Sensory Research OR Bachelor’s degree in Food Science with minimum 2 years relevant (sensory panel facilitation) and functional business experience in food, beverage or similar industry OR BTech qualification with minimum 2 years relevant (sensory panel facilitation) and functional business experience in food, beverage or similar industry.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in applying quantitative descriptive, discriminative and rapid sensory profiling methodologies according to sensory best practices.
    • Proficiency in MS Office, Compusense® Cloud, PanelCHECK and XLStat software.
    • Statistical analysis skills with ability to interpret and report panel performance monitoring data and project results.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
    • Good interpersonal and written/ oral communication skills.
    • Ability to influence and motivate large groups.
