Software Engineer in Test (Contractor)

In this contracting role, you will analyse the product requirements to write Java tests that will ensure the middleware is operating as expected on the set-top-box (decoder). Examples of this would be:

Write test-code to execute on the decoder to confirm that when a user transitions from Family to Premium subscription, their recordings, BoxOffice and CatchUp titles are retained.
Write test-code to execute on the decoder to confirm that the correct CatchUp and BoxOffice content downloads correctly.

We use the following technologies:

Embedded Linux & bash scripting, DVB, MPEG, Java, Java TV, XML, Ant, Maven, Eclipse IDE, git, Jenkins/Hudson.

Responsibilities:

• Preparation, execution (including design & development) and documentation for software component and system testing (automated testing)
• Build the correct environment to allow for reliable and repeatable results
• This includes server configurations, conditional access and bitstream content creation
• Analysing, reproducing and reporting component defects and special situations
• Provide bug reports to the development engineers and work directly with development engineers to troubleshoot potential problem areas
• Design and implement test harnesses (test automation frameworks) and integrate this to build and release frameworks
• Automation of recurring test cases in a test scripting tool (including API testing)
• Participate in review activities (project plans, requirement, design and test case) to assume joint responsibility with other team members on quality and schedule
• Ensure that all above activities are conducted consistently and in accordance with company policies and procedures
• Other testing activities: system characterization, usability, performance and regression testing
• Estimation and planning
• Research functionality and implementation of current and future testing techniques and technologies
• Participate in departmental improvement and innovation processes to deliver projects that enhance project/department performance to enable positive business results
• Interfacing with the Engineering team in Randburg and Paris

Required Knowledge & Skills:

• Completed Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electronic/Computer Engineering, or related technical degree; or equivalent experience
• Experience in software testing and test methodologies (developing test cases, test procedures, test scripts and test reports and doing the "hands on" implementation of those plans)
• 4+ years' professional hands-on development/coding experience in Java
• Professional working experience with Agile Software Engineering processes and methodologies
• Professional working experience with all phases of the Software Development Life Cycle and Application Lifecycle Management tools
• Experience in a Digital TV environment (MPEG, DVB and/or IP) would be highly advantageous
• Experience with Java TV, MHP, JMF would be advantageous
• Experience with embedded Java & Linux would be advantageous
• Must have excellent verbal and written English
