    Deputy Editor

    Job Description

    An experienced, enthusiastic deputy editor is required in my clients food division, based in Cape Town.

    Strong management, writing and editing skills are essential, as is the ability to work efficiently and creatively within an established brand strategy. The ideal candidate should ideally have an interest in food, media experience across both print and digital platforms and a positive, proactive approach.

    The responsibilities will include:

    • Working closely with the editor in chief on the food content strategy and delivery to client
    • Deputising for the editor on all content-related decisions to ensure the content serves the needs of both the target audience and the client
    • Managing the content teams across both print and digital and creating new and more agile systems where required
    • Working across platforms to ensure content is compelling and relevant to different audiences
    • Working closely with the group managing editor, features editor and art department to ensure production deadlines are met
    • Commissioning and briefing contributors in line with the multi-platform content strategy (eg.writers, photographers and multimedia contributors)
    • Writing feature and display copy in the brand tone of voice (headlines, blurbs, sidebars, captions)
    • Editing raw copy where required
    • Repurposing content for other platforms/channels
    • Ensuring the brand’s tone of voice is maintained across platforms
    • Working closely with the client’s brand marketing team to ensure their KPIs are met while maintaining editorial independence
    • Assisting with content creation and production on additional food-related projects and campaigns for the same client (outside of the core brand)
    • Attending all editorial and client meetings as required
    • Keeping up to date with food and media trends
    • Attending events and launches where required

    The requirements are:

    • Genuine interest in and knowledge of food
    • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a senior editorial position, preferably on a consumer print title (i.e. senior features editor, assistant, deputy or editor)
    • Experience of managing teams across platforms
    • Experience in content creation across print and digital media
    • Some previous experience working in content marketing (or for a corporate client)
    • would be beneficial
    • Ability to think strategically and commercially as well as creatively.
