Job description

Job Purpose:

The effective maintenance and repair of sophisticated protection systems and associated equipment.

Key Responsibility Areas:

• Assist the chief protection maintenance officer in the efficient control and execution of the division's functions.
• Plan and schedule maintenance and test work.
• Conduct all maintenance testing of the electricity unit's protection relays.
• Install and wire protection relays and protection schemes.
• Repair and maintain protection relays and schemes.
• Conduct all protection maintenance with high standard of workmanship.
• The computerisation and maintenance of records and drawings of various types of protective devices and schemes, and production of statistics.
• Implement training programmes and ensure that staff comply with company rules and policies in order to promote an environment of high expertise and discipline.
• Assist the Protection Engineering Division with broadly defined post fault analysis and engineering by applying sound engineering principles in order to enable effective engineering solution.
• Assist the Test Division with general testing and commissioning and developing effective procedures and strategies by sharing protection maintenance experience in order to ensure optimal testing and commissioning.
• Keeping abreast of technological developments in the power system protection field by undergoing training, attending courses, conferences and seminars.
• Liaison with other authorise, departments and divisions by attending technical meetings/committees in order to share ideas and deal with integrated technical and nontechnical issues.
• Appointments in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (1993) and associated Regulations, as required by the Head: Electricity Training of subordinate staff, including Technicians; Protection Maintenance and Senior Techni Observe Departmental Policies, Safety Rules, and System Operating Regulations when temporarily removing, testing, and re-instating protection systems in critical circ.

Essential Requirements:

• National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) from an Institution recognised by the Council of Higher Education.
• Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a Professional Technician in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current).
• Must pass a proficiency test, set by the department, to prove sufficient general knowledge of protection and testing fundamentals and philosophies.
• Must be trained in First Aid or be trained within 6 months of the date of appointment.
• Valid motor vehicle driving license (Code EB).
• 1 years’ experience in the electricity supply industry with a sound knowledge of systems and equipment of large electricity distribution undertakings.

Preferred Requirements:

2 years relevant experience with and knowledge of eThekwini Electricity's distribution and transmission system and technical practices primarily in the protection and test environment.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically fit to carry out all the duties of the post.
