    Assistant Stock Control Manager

    About You

    • As Assistant Stock Control Manager, you’re the type who treats stock integrity like a personal mission (because it kind of is). Whether it’s FMCG, tech, imports, or apparel, you’ve got a sharp eye for detail and a “nothing slips through the cracks” mindset.
    • You’re just as comfortable rolling up your sleeves on the warehouse floor as you are stepping back to rethink layouts, streamline SOPs, and level up how the whole operation runs. Bonus points if you enjoy turning chaos into calm, mentoring a team to bring their A-game, and finding smarter, faster, better ways to get things done - all while keeping the shelves (and standards) fully stocked.

    Responsibilities:

    Management Deputisation & Strategic Contribution

    • Act as the primary stand-in for the Stock Control Manager in their absence, assuming full operational authority over the department.
    • Assist in the development, review, and implementation of warehouse SOPs, policies, and best practices.
    • Contribute to flagging inefficiencies to the Stock Control Manager.
    • Support cross-departmental coordination with procurement, logistics, and finance teams as required.

    Stock Management & Category Oversight

    • Maintain full accountability for the accurate receiving, processing, and storage of all inbound stock across imports, FMCG, technology, and apparel.
    • Enforce stock classification, labelling, and system capturing standards across all categories.
    • Drive regular cycle counts, stock reconciliations, and variance investigations, reporting outcomes to the Stock Control Manager.
    • Implement and uphold category-specific handling protocols, including FMCG compliance requirements, security procedures for technology products, and garment care standards for apparel.
    • Identify systemic stock control issues and propose corrective measures proactively.

    Receiving & Inbound Logistics

    • Oversee and take final responsibility for the end-to-end receiving process for all inbound shipments, including imports and local deliveries.
    • Ensure accuracy of import documentation including purchase orders, packing lists, and customs clearance records.
    • Coordinate with the Senior Processing Clerk to maintain consistent processing turnaround times.
    • Review and continuously improve receiving SOPs in line with operational demands and regulatory requirements.

    Warehouse Layout & Pallet Management

    • Take ownership of warehouse floor layout design and ongoing optimisation to maximise space utilisation and operational efficiency.
    • Manage pallet allocations and alignment across all product zones, ensuring logical categorisation by stock type, velocity, and storage requirements.
    • Proactively review and adjust layout configurations in response to changes in volume, new product ranges, or business requirements.
    • Ensure all layout arrangements comply with health, safety, and fire regulations.
    • Maintain clearly demarcated aisles, zones, and pallet locations at all times.

    People Management & Team Development

    • Take ownership of managing and developing warehouse floor staff, including the capacity to step in and perform any role within the operation as circumstances demand.
    • Provide ongoing coaching and mentorship to develop team capability.
    • Initiate and manage disciplinary processes where required, in line with company policy and labour legislation.
    • Conduct daily team briefings to communicate targets, operational priorities, and procedural updates.
    • Foster a high-performance culture grounded in accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.

    Reporting & KPI Accountability

    • Monitor and report on key warehouse performance indicators including receiving accuracy, processing turnaround times, stock discrepancy rates, and space utilisation.
    • Prepare and present operational reports for the Stock Control Manager on a regular basis.
    • Identify trends, risks, and opportunities within warehouse operations and escalate or action accordingly.

    Experience and Qualifications:

    • Matric / Grade 12 (essential).
    • Relevant tertiary qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain, or Warehouse Management (essential).
    • Forklift licence (advantageous).
    • At least 3-5 years of experience in a warehouse or stock control environment.
    • At least 2–3 years in a supervisory or team leadership capacity.
    • Demonstrated experience managing multiple product categories including imports, FMCG, technology, and/or apparel.
    • Proven experience in warehouse layout planning, pallet management, and space optimization.
    • Prior involvement in SOP development or process improvement initiatives.
    • Experience managing staff performance, including performance reviews and disciplinary processes.
    • Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to develop others.
    • High level of accountability and the ability to make sound operational decisions independently.
    • Excellent organisational and planning ability across multiple priorities.
    • Working knowledge of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) or stock control software and advanced Excel skills.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to report upward and lead downward effectively.
    • Sound understanding of health, safety, and labour regulations applicable to a warehouse environment.
    • Ability to remain composed and decisive under pressure in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
