    Associate Professor / Professor and Head of the Department

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in programmes on offer in the Department;
    • Developing a research programme in an appropriate area of expertise or expanding existing research programmes;
    • Publishing research articles in the foremost national/international accredited journals, as well as other research outputs, e.g. scholarly books and book chapters;
    • Participate in national and international conferences within the focus areas listed below;
    • Supervising postgraduate Master’s and Doctoral students withing the focus areas listed below; 
    • Performing assigned departmental duties (e.g. of an administrative nature);
    • Community engagement in relation to the focus areas listed below;
    • Representing the Department on Faculty and other committees as assigned.

    In addition to the above-mentioned responsibilities, the Head of Department will be responsible for:

    • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
    • Promoting, planning, organising and managing academic and research programmes and building the Department’s research profile;
    • Recruiting and managing professional staff;
    • Managing all financial activities including externally funded projects;
    • Playing an active role as an academic leader at a national and international level;
    • Marketing and growing the Department on all levels.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    For Associate Professor:

    • Candidates for the post of Associate Professor should be in possession of a completed doctorate with specialisation in one or more of the following focus areas:
      • Law of Contract;
      • Private International Law;
      • Unjustified Enrichment;
      • Law of Succession;
      • Law of Estoppel;
      • Law of Delict;
      • Intellectual Property Law;
      • Law and Technology;
      • Family Law;
      • Property Law.
    • An excellent academic record reflecting the candidate's status as established teacher and researcher of good standing within one or more of the focus areas listed above;
    • Preferably eight years' teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in one or more of the focus areas listed above;
    • Evidence of curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
    • At least sixteen accredited quality publications within the focus areas listed above, of which at least six must have been published in the last three years;
    • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision within the focus areas;
    • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching;
    • Extensive relevant academic administration experience and academic citizenship.

    For Professor:

    • Candidates for the post of Professor should be in possession of a completed doctorate with specialisation in one or more of the following focus areas:
      • Law of Contract;
      • Private International Law;
      • Unjustified Enrichment;
      • Law of Succession;
      • Law of Estoppel;
      • Law of Delict;
      • Intellectual Property Law;
      • Law and Technology;
      • Family Law;
      • Property Law.
    • An excellent academic record reflecting the candidate's international standing as leading teacher and internationally renowned researcher within one or more of the focus areas listed above;
    • Preferably ten years' teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in one or more of the focus areas listed above;
    • Evidence of curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
    • At least thirty accredited quality publications within the focus areas listed above, of which at least six must have been published in the last three years;
    • Evidence of papers delivered at international subject conferences in one or more of the focus areas listed above;
    • Evidence of successful Doctoral and Masters' supervision within the focus areas listed above;
    • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching;
    • Extensive relevant academic administration experience and academic citizenship.

    • Managerial experience at a tertiary level;
    • Excellent leadership skills;
    • Excellent language and communication skills;
    • Excellent teaching and research skills;
    • Excellent presentation skills;
    • Excellent scholarly writing skills;
    • Strong interpersonal skills;
    • Attention to detail and accuracy;
    • Ability to facilitate e-learning and e-communication;
    • Ability to plan and conduct assessment events;
    • Ability to work in teams and to lead teams;
    • Ability to take initiative and to explore academic collaborative work opportunities;
    • Ability to work under pressure.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • Current NRF rating;
    • Experience in high-level liaison with internal, external and international stakeholders and professional bodies;
    • Good understanding of professional qualifications;
    • Good understanding of Higher Education policies and frameworks relevant to the LLB qualification, as well as funding initiatives to support and develop academic staff;
    • Admission and experience as a legal practitioner.
