Key responsibilities

• Check, edit and rewrite article content to make sure there are no gaps or contradictions in the text and that the topic is thoroughly explored and covered
• Edit or rewrite articles to ensure that the angle and approach is fresh, original and on point and that the article is well structured, accessible and easy to understand
• Edit or rewrite articles to ensure that they provide an interesting, engaging, useful and / or highly enjoyable reading experience to the reader and to make sure that the final product consists of excellent journalism
• Rewrite and shorten columns and other magazine and digital content
• Check articles translated from English for factual correctness and ensure that they are written in a fluent Huisgenoot style and authentic, idiomatic Afrikaans.
• Provide feedback and mentor journalists
• Comply with Huisgenoot's quality, style and content standards;
• Comply with the requirements of the South African Press Code
• Plan, coordinate, manage or edit certain sections within the brand or other brand projects where necessary and at the request of the editor

Applicants need the following qualifications, experience, skills and characteristics:

• Diploma or degree in journalism, languages, literature or media studies;
• At least ten years of experience in journalism, with sufficient experience as a rewriter and content editor strongly preferred;
• Good general knowledge and knowledge of current affairs;
• Excellent writing and editing skills in Afrikaans;
• Knowledge of the publication's target market and a passion for journalism;
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others;
• The ability to work independently;
• Good decision-making skills and sound judgment;
• Perseverance and the ability to work effectively under great pressure and to meet deadlines;
• Valid driving license;
• Proficiency in relevant computer software packages
