Electrical Specialist – National LV Operations (Gauteng)

    PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

    • Responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, safety, and compliance of all low-voltage electrical systems across Teraco’s national data-centre estate. The role provides technical leadership, analytical insight, and hands-on operational support to maintenance teams, site operations, and service providers, with a strong focus on risk reduction, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.
    • The position bridges engineering, operations, maintenance, and training, supporting the evolution from time-based preventative maintenance toward condition-based and insight-led electrical asset management, while maintaining strict compliance with SANS standards, OEM requirements, and Teraco engineering principles.

    MAIN FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
    Oversight of Maintenance

    • Support the maintenance team in optimising national LV maintenance schedules to improve reliability, efficiency, and operational consistency.
    • Analyse maintenance data with the maintenance team to identify systemic risks, recurring failures, efficiency improvement opportunities, and required corrective actions, ensuring follow-through and implementation.
    • Participate in all major LV electrical maintenance activities to ensure appropriate scope and quality of work and coordinate with the GMR2.1 during MV maintenance interventions.
    • Work with the Teraco maintenance department to advance the shift from preventative maintenance toward condition-based maintenance, leveraging data, monitoring, and system insights.
    • Provide technical guidance to the Teraco maintenance department to ensure all electrical systems are maintained and tested in compliance with Teraco standards, international best practice, and OEM specifications

    Load & Risk Management

Review load trends across all LV networks to identify early-warning indicators of:

    • Overloaded LV supply networks
    • Capacity constraints on UPS systems, STS units, and rectifiers
    • Areas of concern, including abnormal losses or inefficiencies
    • Support live-system load balancing, including UPS phase balancing, EC load verification, data validation, metering strategy alignment, and investigation of elevated neutral currents.
    • Collaborate with site management and BMS teams to drive energy-efficiency improvements and optimise power quality across LV systems.
    • Conduct detailed power quality analyses, including power factor, harmonic distortion, voltage dips/swells, and load imbalance evaluations.

    Training, Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer

    • Provide targeted training to site technicians on LV best practices (balancing, trip testing, fault finding, PF management), and work with the L&D Manager to design and deliver programmes that enhance electrical competency across the organisation.
    • Develop operational guidelines, engineering notes, and technical references to support consistent and safe LV operations.
    • Create, review, and refine LV electrical system simulation scenarios, ensuring all teams regularly complete emergency-response exercises and remain proficient in required response protocols.

    LV Infrastructure Performance & Compliance

    • Serve as the LV subject-matter expert in root-cause analyses relating to LV incidents, equipment trips, power quality disturbances, or component degradation; ensure corrective actions are tracked and national lessons learned are incorporated into scenario-based training.
    • Ensure all LV assets comply with SANS standards and internal engineering requirements, providing guidance to maintain compliance across all sites.
    • Perform regular LV equipment inspections to proactively identify and mitigate emerging issues.
    • Review the availability and validity of CoCs in collaboration with the operations document controller, design team, and site management to ensure documentation accuracy and compliance.

    Provide Technical Support to Operations

    • Close the skills gap between service providers and Teraco Operations by critically evaluating service-provider recommendations, validating proposed repairs, and supporting technicians with complex fault investigations.
    • Deliver specialist LV engineering support to all regional operations teams, ensuring consistent technical guidance across the national estate.
    • Act as an expert user of Teraco’s Building Management Systems (including EBO and PME) to ensure maximum operational insight and value.
    • Trend and analyse key operational parameters, including energy use, breaker operations, power factor, Total Harmonic Distortion, efficiency metrics, load imbalance, UPS losses, and alarm patterns.
    • Collaborate with BMS teams and site management to develop meaningful dashboards and reporting tools that highlight performance trends and identify improvement opportunities for each facility.
