    Junior Clinical/Counselling Psychologist - Department of Student Affairs

    JOB PURPOSE:

    To render clinical/counselling Psychology services to students/young adults in order to ensure academic success and emotional wellness. Drive direct support and overall case management for students referred by the Dell Young Leaders and Sikelela Scholars programmes. Develop and identify training and guidance programmes to enhance the academic success of students/young adults. The development and assessment of mental services delivery via electronic platforms. Data analysis and reporting as part of research processes, and tracking effective service delivery for referred students.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The successful candidate's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

    Psychotherapeutic clinical/counselling services to ensure academic success and emotional wellness:

    • Rendering clinical/counselling services (individually and group work), and present programmes to enhance student wellness;
    • Presenting group work sessions and co-curriculum programmes for students/young adults;
    • Assisting with the development of new programmes, and evaluating existing programmes, particularly via electronic platforms;

    Psychological assessment:

    • Delivering academic support services and programmes;
    • Consulting with academic personnel, applicable internal and external role players, and students, to determine needs, problems, possibilities for programmes, and other relevant tendencies;

    Research:

    • Conducting research to support the University’s core function of research;
    • Ensuring that your CPD points are maintained;
    • Presenting papers/posters at annual conferences, and providing workshops applicable to service delivery areas;

    Administrative duties:

    • Conducting and maintaining up to date and ethical records in accordance with professional expectations;
    • Contributing to the administrative running of the Student Counselling Unit as is required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • MA or MSc degree in Clinical/Counselling Psychology;
    • Proven clinical and/or counselling experience with students/young adults;
    • Evidence of one year experience as an intern, in working therapeutically with students/young people as a clinical/counselling Psychologist;
    • Actively registered with HPCSA as a Clinical or Counselling psychologist.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    Knowledge:

    • Evidence based psychotherapeutic interventions;
    • SA code of Conduct and Ethics for Psychologists;
    • Sound knowledge of diagnostics;
    • Knowledge of tertiary educational institutional systems;

    Technical:

    • Strong interest in mental health technology solutions;
    • Computer skills (MS Word and e-mail);
    • Ability to work on an electronic record systems;
    • Good report writing skills;
    • Ability to administer and interpret a wide variety of psychometric instruments;
    • Ability to diagnose;

    Behavioural competencies:

    • Good interpersonal skills;
    • Good and accurate communication skills (written and spoken);
    • Sensitivity to a diverse environment;
    • Planning, organizing, and prioritizing skills;
    • Strong sense of professionalism and ethical conduct;
    • Ability to handle information with high confidentiality;
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
    • Ability to work under pressure;
    • Willingness to occasionally work outside of hours for emergencies and weekend events as required;
    • Unquestioned values, ethics and a deep commitment to the goal of supporting the mental health and overall wellness of students to achieve success at the university;
    • Ability to develop technological solutions.
