Minimum three (3) years’ relevant experience working with canines in a policing/law enforcement environment. Proven ability in training canines and their handlers
Extensive knowledge and experience of canine training and canine command training.
Sound knowledge of canine behaviour and ability to identify and address animal behavioural problems
Must be able to handle canines, be mentally compatible to work with animals and have no fear of canines
Must be able to sustain operational service requirements and standards to minimise veterinary costs.
Must be able to address first aid needs of the canines.
Key Performance Areas
Coordinate and develop specialised training and commands for the different service dogs within Safety and Security
Conduct summative performance assessments of trained police dogs and their handlers
Assist with development of suitable training programmes/interventions for service dogs and handlers
Coordinate training to service dogs and handlers regarding attending scenes where serious crimes have been committed
Provide effective and appropriate management and caring of K9 animals.
Conduct appraisals to measure performance against agreed objectives, counselling and consulting with personnel developmental goals, career paths and short-term targets and standards within the Section
Ensure good working relations between the City and its external Safety and Security service providers
Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Manage training and skills development and the transfer of skills and knowledge
